A former Miss Universe contestant and current politician is suspected in the United States of being the head of a drug trafficking organization. Iselle Anli Zuniga Morfin, 29, represented Guatemala in the 2017 Miss Universe pageant. Following her success, she began a political career in Guatemala and was elected in June 2023 as mayor of Ayutla, following in the footsteps of her father Eric Salvador Zuniga Rodríguez (who was known as "El Pocho ").
A year before the end of his term as mayor in 2019, the authorities in the United States accused El Pocho of leading a drug gang known as "Los Pochos". The group is suspected of moving cocaine from Guatemala, through Mexico, into the United States, working in collaboration with the Sinaloa Cartel - the most powerful drug trafficking organization in Mexico.

El Pocho turned himself in to Guatemalan authorities in 2019 and was extradited to the US, where he died of cancer in prison in April 2020. Now it seems his daughter, the beauty queen, has taken his place. In late February, the US Treasury Department imposed sanctions that include closing bank accounts and seizing funds on Members of the "Los Pochus" gang, including Zuniga Morphin and her husband Juan Jose Morales Sifuentes, 33, who is accused of carrying out the executions.

Today she is mayor - and probably also the head of a drug cartel
The U.S. Treasury Department's press release described Zuniga Morphin as a "leader of Los Pocos" who "reportedly uses her political connections" to advance the gang's interests. A grand jury in Texas in the United States indicted Morales on several counts in June 2023, including the manufacture and distribution of cocaine.
Morales was arrested by Guatemalan authorities on December 11 last year and is now awaiting extradition to the United States. The day before the arrest, Izel Soniga posted photos on Facebook alongside her husband as the two celebrate the fact that she is pregnant with their second child.
