The planned reconstruction of the state road between Penzberg and Iffeldorf and the traffic lights at the motorway entrances will not happen this year either. The work is now scheduled for next year. A new variant with a direct ramp for drivers is now being discussed. No decision has yet been made on a solution for cyclists.

Penzberg/Iffeldorf - The reconstruction of the Penzberg-Iffeldorf state road was originally planned following the bridge work on the A95, which was completed in autumn 2022. But the start is further delayed. Andreas Lenker from the State Building Authority now cites “spring 2025 at the earliest” as a realistic start for renovations. This applies to both the traffic light plans and a cyclist solution. The reason for the conversion plans is, on the one hand, the desire to improve the turning situation to and from the motorway and at the same time reduce the risk of traffic jams on the motorway. On the other hand, the safety of cyclists should be increased, for whom the path that leads past the on- and off-ramps is a dangerous passage.

New idea: Direct ramp for access towards Munich

Andreas Lenker, who is responsible for road construction in the districts of Weilheim-Schongau and Landsberg am Lech at the State Building Authority, reported when asked that coordination with Autobahn GmbH and Nature Conservation was currently underway. According to him, nothing has changed in terms of the various possible variants. Except for one new idea: According to this, a direct ramp from the state road to the right up to the motorway could be created on the Penzberg side for drivers who want to get on the A95 to Munich from the direction of Penzberg. The advantage, says Lenker, would be that there would no longer be any left turns onto the motorway on the Penzberg side and therefore no traffic lights would be needed there. This would relieve pressure on the junction and traffic could flow much more quickly.

According to him, this variant was not possible until now due to a biotope. However, according to Lenker, this biotope was so badly affected by Autobahn GmbH's construction work on the new bridge that it can hardly be called a biotope anymore.

But the new idea is not compatible with the cyclist bridge

However, a direct ramp wouldn't really mix with a cyclist bridge. As reported, there is consideration to build a cycle bridge over the state road parallel to the motorway, with the effect that cyclists no longer have to pass the entrances and exits of the A95. According to the idea, the access to the cyclist bridge should run exactly where the direct ramp for drivers could be built. According to Lenker, the cyclist bridge would therefore have to be long enough to reach over the car ramp - or the cyclists would have to cross the ramp. No solution has been found at the moment, he explains.

The other option would still be to guide the cyclists under the bridge and over the state road using their own traffic lights, so that they at least don't have to cross the on- and off-ramps of the A95. Only one thing is clear, says Lenker: that there is no cyclist tunnel because it would be too complicated.

A solution should be available next fall

There is also no answer to the question of what the whole thing costs and how the costs are ultimately divided. Autobahn GmbH has a decisive say in this.

According to Lenker, the goal is to have a solution next fall “that hopefully everyone can understand.” A “detailed nature conservation study” will also be necessary. If everything works out, the work could be put out to tender over the winter. A start of construction in spring 2025 would then be realistic. Nine months is no longer important, says Lenker. It's better to have a well thought-out solution.
