Jan Hofer moderated “RTL Direkt” on April 2nd as usual – but without sound. Now the Cologne broadcaster explained the breakdown.
Update from April 3, 2024:
Berlin/Cologne - “RTL Direkt” was actually supposed to provide information about current world events on Tuesday evening (April 2), but initially nothing came of it: a sound glitch got in the way of news anchor Jan Hofer (74). . Now, a day later, at the request of

, RTL clarified what was behind it.
“Due to technical problems we had a sound loss for a few minutes last night. The entire team worked hard to resolve this and we then returned to normal operations without any disruptions,” a spokeswoman for the Cologne private broadcaster said in writing.
Just crackling for minutes: massive sound glitch on “RTL Direkt”
First report from April 2nd, 2024:
On Tuesday (April 2nd, 2024) RTL broadcast “Special Situation – A Hamburg Crime: The Attack” at prime time. Before the television evening continues with the reportage magazine “Extra”, Jan Hofer brings the TV viewers up to date with “RTL Direkt”. But instead of the daily news, all you can hear on RTL is crackling for minutes. TV viewers online are laughing at this embarrassing mishap.
Jan Hofer moderates “RTL Direkt” without sound for 20 minutes on Tuesday evening. Because instead of the latest news, TV viewers only hear crackling. The picture works, but the sound is gone. RTL doesn't seem to be able to fix the sound problem during the news broadcast. Just in time for the end at 10:31 p.m. the sound is back on. RTL apologized for the sound problems in a lower back - but the broadcaster could not be reached for a statement.
But whoever has the damage doesn't have to worry about the ridicule - the Internet does that all by itself. “Don’t they notice things like that on the station? “You’re showing a malfunction,” said an annoyed X user (formerly Twitter). “The proof: 0 RTL employees watch their own program,” commented another TV viewer on RTL’s crackling concert. “Jan Hofer had surgery on his vocal cords – he crackles so much,” laughs this user. “Someone in the editorial team at RTL must have nibbled on the sound cable,” another TV viewer wants to know.

Speaking of breakdowns: Tino Böttcher and Stephanie Müller-Spirra presented the “Mittagsmagazin” on ARD on Tuesday with their usual confidence – but suddenly it became dark behind them. The technology was failing.
