The Hotel Bergeblick in Bad Tölz has been nominated for a prestigious design award. One detail in particular sets it apart from other hotels.

Bad Tölz – Not everyone can be enthusiastic about the unusual architecture of the Hotel Bergeblick on the Wackersberger Höhe in Bad Tölz. During the Lenggries carnival procession, the complex with its striking wooden building shell recently received gentle ridicule and was dubbed the “Hotel Strahlblick”. The hotel is now receiving high recognition from international experts: it is one of the ten nominees for the “Hotel Design Award”, an important European architecture and design prize for the hospitality industry.

“Certainly a highlight”: New hotel in Bad Tölz receives European award

The prize will be awarded on April 15th at the “196+ Forum” specialist event in Milan. Johannes Tien, investor and operator of the hotel, will probably travel to Italy for the award ceremony with his son Jacob, who is studying architecture. “Being there is certainly a highlight,” says the 64-year-old.

He considers it an honor in itself to see the big names that the “Bergeblick” can join here. 37 hotels from 13 countries applied for the prize. The “Bergeblick” is now the only hotel in Germany among the last ten. Other hopefuls selected by a top-class jury of twelve experts include hotels in Zurich, Paris, Milan, Bordeaux and Amalfi.

The new Hotel Bergeblick only opened in August 2023

Architect Sebastian Beham from Bairawies, who was responsible for building his first hotel here, is also pleased that the “Bergeblick” scores points in this environment. “After all, Bad Tölz is not a place that is known worldwide, and there is no large chain with huge financial power behind the hotel.” At 20 million euros, the investment is “comparatively cheap in relation to a lot of what else is being built,” says Beham. Tien also says: “We can be proud that we are here as a small hotel in Bad Tölz.”

We reported that Tien opened the hotel at the beginning of August 2023. The three-story building made of wood and wood hybrid construction includes 38 double rooms, eight suites, a 500 square meter wellness area as well as a breakfast and rooftop terrace. It is complemented by a “Senses House” with a meditation room, sauna and infrared cabin as well as three independent “lodges”, each with its own pool and outdoor shower.

We didn't build the hotel for today, but for tomorrow and the day after.

Johannes Tien now sees the nomination as a reward for having shown the courage to do things differently when developing “Bergeblick”. “We didn’t strictly follow the specifications of other hotels and didn’t just focus on the current situation and today’s requirements,” he says. “We didn’t build the hotel for today, but for tomorrow and the day after.”

There was also headwind for “Bergeblick”, especially at the beginning

A special feature of the trade magazine Tophotel highlights the “skeletal scaffolding façade made of wood”, which the investor bought for 800,000 euros alone - even though it is a “purely decorative element with no static significance”, as Tien himself says. By the way: Russian larch wood was originally intended for this purpose. The war in Ukraine caused Tien to switch to native spruce.

There was sometimes headwind for some unconventional aspects of the hotel - such as the fact that there is no physical reception. “Especially in the beginning, there were guests who had difficulties with this different type of hotel,” he says. He is now receiving very positive feedback from many guests. Together with the current nomination, this is a confirmation for him. “It’s nice that something new is catching on.”

Success also at the “Spa Star Award”

In addition to the “Hotel Design Award”, the Tölzer Hotel Bergeblick can also hope for another prize this year. The hotel owned by investor and operator Johannes Tien is also nominated for the “Spa Star Award” in the “Health Concept” category for its wellness area. A ten-member jury has already chosen the “Bergeblick” into the top three places. The exact placement will be announced on June 25th at a gala evening at the “Spa Life Germany” event in Bayerisch Gmain.

Architect Beham hopes that the international recognition will have a “signaling effect” for Bad Tölz and the region. The nomination shows “that you should be brave, try out fresh concepts and go your own way,” he says. According to the 39-year-old, the nomination helps his architectural office to be “recognized nationally and internationally” even at its more hidden location in Einöd.

But Tien and Beham don't quite agree on who deserves the prize above all else. “Three-quarters” of the award goes to the architect, says Tien. Beham, in turn, emphasizes that this is an award for the best concepts in the hotel industry. With “Bergeblick” the architecture is a statement that reflects the values and “idealistic nature” of the house. But just as important is how this idea is lived in everyday hotel life.
