The oldest inn in Lower Saxony has been serving guests for more than six centuries. The inn in Einbeck has a long history.
Einbeck – Inns are not only places to stop and relax, but also meeting places where people from different walks of life come together. Historical inns in particular have a special meaning because they also open a window into the past. And one thing is clear: If the walls in the oldest inn in Lower Saxony could talk, they would certainly tell a lot. The historic Brodhaus inn in Einbeck has been serving guests since the 15th century.
Oldest inn in Lower Saxony: Brodhaus has been part of Einbeck's inn scene for six centuries
Built directly on the Einbeck market square in the Northeim district, the oldest inn in Lower Saxony has undergone various transformations over the centuries. Originally founded as a bakery and hostel for traveling journeymen, it has been used for all kinds of meetings under the name Brodhaus since 1444 at the latest.

After the town fire in Einbeck on July 26, 1540, today's inn was able to be rebuilt thanks to the support of various churches in the area. After the necessary renovation, the Brodhaus served as the headquarters of the bakers' guild and as an inn until it was bought by an innkeeper in 1801. To this day, the Brodhaus in the former Hanseatic city of Einbeck is known as a restaurant. By the way: Germany's oldest flea market also takes place regularly in Lower Saxony.
Brodhaus in Einbeck: New tenants renovated the historic inn
The Brodhaus has been the property of the traditional Einbecker Brauhaus brewery for 50 years. In 2022, the oldest inn in Lower Saxony opened under new tenants. As the
Göttinger Tageblatt
reports, the brewery invested almost a quarter of a million euros in the renovation of the inn. But despite the new cuisine, tradition should continue to play a major role in the historic Brodhaus, according to the new boss Sven Falke. Another traditional inn in Lower Saxony recently had to close.
Oldest inn in Lower Saxony: That's why it's not the oldest in the world
According to the Guinness Book of Records, the oldest pub in the world is the Röhrl restaurant in Eilsbrunn, Bavaria (Regensburg district). The inn has been in operation since 1658 and has always been run by the same family. Although the Einbeck Wirtshaus is older, what counts for the record is that, unlike the Brodhaus, it is a family-run restaurant and has been in operation since the 17th century. And even if the oldest inn in the world is not in Lower Saxony, the state can be proud of another record: the oldest family in the world comes from Osterode.
