508 million euros are needed for urgent interventions to remove gravel and mud sediments from Italian drinking water reservoirs. The funds are needed to remove 58 million cubic meters of sediment.
We read it in the 2nd Report of the Extraordinary Commissioner against water scarcity, Nicola Dall'Acqua, to the Steering Committee on the water emergency.
The estimate of 508 million, we read in the Report, "refers only to the interventions deemed to be priorities as necessary for restoring the functionality of the drainage works.
With regard to the recoverable volumes, an average national percentage of sediments to be removed is estimated to be equal to 5% of the volume of the invaded, very variable from case to case".
"The reservoirs - we read in the document - present in most cases, also due to the presence of substantial volumes of sediment, a limited useful capacity compared to that of the project, as well as compared to that authorized resulting from the application of the limitations released by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport ".
"From the last update carried out by the seven district basin authorities - we read again in the report -, out of a total of 4681 large strategic reservoirs, the authorized volume is equal to 8,406 Mm3, compared to 10,352 Mm3, which instead represents the project volume The authorized volume is therefore equal to approximately 80% of the project volume, indicating the presence of important margins for recovery of reservoir capacity".
