Three women, three generations, three stories? The book “The Summer Where It All Began” is about the lives of Hélène, Marguerite and Odette, whose lives are intertwined. The setting is in the northwestern end of France.

Hélène is sixteen and lives in a small village in rocky Finistère. She loves her harsh homeland, her boyfriend Yannick and the peaceful village life. But the arrival of Marguerite, the new elegant French teacher from Paris, and her husband Raymond, a charming writer with writer's block, shakes everything up. Hélène feels attracted to Raymond, while Marguerite secretly looks for her mother, who is said to come from this area. And then there is Odette, widow and village shop owner, whose father was murdered during the German occupation. She was sent to Paris in the 1940s, where she was raped as a housemaid, had to give up the child and only returned to her home village years later. The lives of these three women are closely intertwined and lead to the roots of Breton history.
