According to Deutsche Bahn, the basic renovation of the approximately 280 kilometer long long-distance route between Hamburg and Berlin next year will cost up to 2.2 billion euros. The amount already includes a risk buffer of around 400 million euros, as the federally owned company announced on Friday. The route is to be fundamentally modernized from mid-June to mid-December 2025 and will be completely closed during this time.
Berlin - After the Riedbahn between Frankfurt and Mannheim, it is the second corridor important for long-distance passenger transport that is being addressed as part of the so-called general renovation.
With the program, the railway wants to fundamentally renovate around 40 busy routes by 2030 in order to become more punctual and reliable again. It starts in July this year on the Riedbahn, which will also be closed for almost six months. Before the Hamburg-Berlin route follows the Emmerich-Oberhausen corridor, which is particularly important for freight traffic.
According to Deutsche Bahn, the modernization of the 70-kilometer-long Riedbahn will cost around 1.3 billion euros. This means that the costs per kilometer on the Hamburg-Berlin route are lower. However, the important long-distance route between the capital and the Hanseatic city has to be closed for several months this year because upcoming construction work on the superstructure has to be carried out. According to the group, there were clear deadlines for this so that this work could not be combined with the general renovation in 2025. dpa
