An alleged irregular traffic of waste directed towards Africa was discovered at the port of Marina di Carrara (Massa Carrara) in an operation conducted by the Financial Police, the Customs and Monopolies Agency and Arpat.
82 tons of waste contained in four containers were seized.
According to what the Financial Police explains in a note, the investigations began during a routine check at the entrance gates of the Tuscan port for a container bound for Tunisia which must have contained textile waste. However, the weight would have aroused suspicion: checks revealed that inside, in addition to used clothes, as indicated in the accompanying documents, there was other material. In particular, according to investigations conducted by the financiers of Massa Carrara, personnel from the Customs Agency of Marina di Carrara and the Arpat, waste plastic materials, leather and RAAE household waste were also found. Similar discovery in three other containers from the same shipping company which bore the same declared contents and the same country of destination: in addition to discarded clothes, old household appliances, shoes and toys were also found, for the export of which a different procedure was necessary. In addition to the seizure, the legal representative of the exporting company, a company from Prato, was reported to the judiciary for waste management and trafficking crimes. The Massa Prosecutor's Office, which validated the seizure, then ordered the reclamation of the waste and the subsequent release of the seizure subject to its regular disposal.
