For the new edition of the Placentia Medievalis palio, the Municipality of Piacenza is organizing a major cultural event dedicated to the 650th anniversary of the death of Francesco Petrarca. The event will be held in Piazza Cavalli on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st April and will focus on the re-enactment of the visit that the poet made to the city in June 1351, welcomed with full honors by the Visconti mayor.
The event program includes a historical Petrarchan procession with ladies and knights and medieval fencing tournaments organized by the Gens Innominabilis School of Arms of Castell'Arquato (Piacenza); a historical themed conference curated by Professor Lorenzo Caravaggi of Lancaster University; thematic visits to the square, the former church of S.Ilario and the Gothic Palace organized by the Archistorica Cultural Association. Also scheduled is the presentation of a new video documentary dedicated to the presence of Petrarca in Piacenza, curated by the architect Manrico Bissi and directed by Gianluigi Ruzzenenti and Silvano Tinelli.
The stalls in the square and under the Gothic arches are unmissable, with typical artisanal products, street food, figures in medieval dress with games and activities for children.
