Who remembers it?
Every time Emmanuel Macron wanted to reform unemployment insurance to discourage those who abuse the system, the unions and left-wing parties raised cries of outrage. They considered the approach “unfair, antisocial, stigmatizing, precarious”, etc. And the same chorus of mourners accompanied last year the gradual postponement of the retirement age. But the government held firm and was right. New rules have come into force for unemployment compensation as well as for the calculation of pensions, with an indifference that amounts to approval: the French are intelligent enough to understand that their country has not necessarily become a social hell.
