Highlights: Vigil for peace: Easter rally in Miesbach for an end to violence. Rally co-organizer Hermann Kraus gave thoughtful considerations. Hamas' attacks on Israel should be condemned in the strongest possible terms. However, with tens of thousands of civilian deaths and injuries, famine and catastrophic medical care in Gaza, the protection of the civilian population must come first. “Never again is the suffering of people in Gaza alone alone, but that doesn’t help,” said Pankia Wank.

There was also an Easter rally in Miesbach in 2024. The participants had a lot of worries on their minds. Instead of a march, there was a vigil for peace.

Miesbach – The weather was not so good for this year's Easter rally in Miesbach. But that didn't deter around 50 demonstrators. An Easter march like in previous years was not held this year; instead, there was a vigil for peace at the memorial in Waitzinger Park on Easter Monday, which was supported by parties, unions, associations and church institutions. The central demand: an end to violence.

Low number of visitors at the Easter rally against violence and for peace in Miesbach

A banner with the dove of peace in front of a globe, the call “Send diplomats instead of weapons!” or music from the “2 Uks”, who, among other things, sang the partisan song “Bella Ciao” – everything was reminiscent of earlier peace demonstrations. But this time it was different. Different because wars are raging in Ukraine, Israel and Gaza, which are geographically close to Europe. It's also different because polarization of opinions in society is apparently increasing.

Christine Negele from the district SPD also saw this as a reason for the rather low number of visitors. During the conflicts, there was disagreement within organizations about what the right response or policy should be. In addition, many would be afraid of hostility or being pushed into an anti-constitutional corner if they took part in the rally.

Negele currently finds the polarization to be more extreme. Depending on their position, people would be viewed as “Putin supporters” or warmongers, as anti-Semites or supporters of genocide. “We have to learn to listen to each other again,” she said. Sometimes there are no either/or solutions, but rather a “both/and”. You also have to disarm verbally.

Easter rally in Miesbach: “Creating peace without weapons”

“Creating peace, without weapons, solidarity with the people in Ukraine, in Palestine and all over the world,” was the motto of Bernhard Weißenbacher from the Left Center Rosenheim in his speech. He criticized the so-called special fund of 100 billion euros for the Bundeswehr, which should also be used for “national defense”. The purchase of 35 nuclear-capable fighter jets alone shows clearly that it is not about the latter, but about upgrading. “If you want peace, you have to break out of military logic,” said Weißenbacher.

Rally co-organizer Hermann Kraus gave thoughtful considerations. Hamas' attacks on Israel should be condemned in the strongest possible terms and the country is clearly entitled to a defensive war. However, with tens of thousands of civilian deaths and injuries, famine and catastrophic medical care in Gaza, the protection of the civilian population must come first.

Ukraine is also waging a legitimate defensive war. However, the conflict is deadlocked. “The number of deaths and injuries continues to grow,” said Kraus. If NATO gets involved, there could be nuclear strikes, and if there are fewer arms deliveries to Ukraine, Putin could be encouraged. Therefore, a ceasefire on the current front line and the immediate start of negotiations are essential.

Vigil for peace in Miesbach: Hardly bearable suffering in Gaza

Vigil co-organizer Pia Wank follows the suffering of the people in Gaza every day, unspeakable suffering that is often not shown in the public media in Germany. About pregnant women without medical care, starving children and adults, people lying under the rubble of bombed-out houses. “I think about these people every day, but thinking alone doesn’t help,” she called for an immediate end to the conflict and sustainable humanitarian aid. Because: “Never again is now.”

Inge Jooß from the PIA support association and the Integration Network focused on the refugees and their situation. Their lives are determined by war, violence, destruction, fear. The topics in this country are defense and rearmament, “weapons, weapons, weapons”. That's why Jooß wanted a change in perspective to combat exploitation, racism, capitalism without borders, to promote education, culture, housing and equal rights for women. The refugees are a living reminder. “Let’s do it differently,” advised Jooß.

Afterwards, the demonstration participants had time to exchange ideas at the lit vigil fires.
