After the temperature records in February and March, April could now also make history. A hot hat-trick, but one that gives cause for concern.

Kassel – The Easter Bunny was just out and about in Germany and summer is already on its way. “Hard to believe, but true,” comments weather expert Dominik Jung in his latest video for

wetter.net

. “It is a historic warmth that will reach us in Germany next weekend,” he is certain. But even if the summer weather at the beginning of April may seem pleasant, the extremely high temperatures in spring are no reason to celebrate.

Weather forecast for the first weekend in April: First it goes “boom-boom”, then it gets up to 30 degrees

After the temperature records in February and March, April could now be the third month in a row to reach new highs. “Then the hat trick would be accomplished,” said Jung. Of course, the weather expert is not referring to sporting events when he speaks of a “three-pack”. The first weekend in April could bring historic high temperatures.

Jung still leaves it open whether we will experience the first hot day of 2024 at the beginning of April with possibly 30 degrees. However, one thing seems certain: on Saturday (April 6th), the first days of summer with temperatures over 25 degrees are expected, especially in the south and west of Germany. The German Weather Service (DWD) also predicts this in its four-day forecast.

But before that happens, according to the predictions of DWD and Jung, there could be another big “rattling” regionally. A low will pass on Thursday (April 4th): “It's going to be a lot of boom-boom, with sometimes strong thunderstorms, squalls, hail, sleet and heavy rain,” says Jung. According to meteorologists, Sahara dust is also on its way to Germany again.

Starting on Friday (April 5th) the temperatures will rise significantly. On Saturday, temperatures could reach around 20 degrees even at 1,500 meters in southern Germany. Jung speaks of a “heat bubble” that normally only occurs in summer. This weekend, Germany is facing a “heat wave for the meteorological history books,” predicts the meteorologist.

Only the north of Germany seems to be bucking this heat trend a little; according to DWD forecasts, it could get significantly cooler there. Nevertheless, highs of over 20 degrees are also possible in the northern federal states.

Temperature forecast for Germany:

14 to 25 degrees

Saturday April 6th

19 to 30 degrees

Sunday April 7th

18 to 29 degrees

Monday, April 8th

18 to 28 degrees

“The heat will pick up again on Monday,” says Jung, and there could still be another summer day regionally in the southeast on Tuesday (April 9). From Wednesday (April 10th) temperatures should return to normal. However, the “typical wishy-washy weather” remains, says Jung. According to weather models, the high temperatures in April could also be accompanied by “significantly more precipitation than usual”. The 100-year calendar had predicted a changeable spring for 2024.

No late cold snap in sight: According to weather experts, climate change is making itself felt

However, according to Jung, a late cold snap in April is not to be expected: “It’s all nonsense! Since mid-January it has been significantly too warm in Germany and winter has never been seen again. Instead, one heat record follows the next.” Despite the joy about pleasant temperatures at the beginning of April, a possible hat trick of temperature records should be more of a cause for concern.

“Climate change is currently gaining momentum. This can no longer be overlooked. All the slogans like 'It was like that before' don't help anymore," emphasizes Jung and adds: "No, it just wasn't like that before. That's why they're all record values, because they haven't happened before.” Given the impending heat wave, the meteorologist doesn't want to imagine what that could mean for the summer.

“The current trends assume a summer that will be one to two degrees warmer than usual. If that happens, the summer of 2024 would be among the five warmest summers since 1881. There could be a lot of things coming our way,” warns Jung. Even before Easter, the weather expert had predicted that the trend towards extreme weather conditions would not stop in April and May.
