The frequent change between frost and thaw last winter has left its mark on the streets. Andechs' mayor Georg Scheitz spots more and larger potholes than usual. The construction yard has a lot to do.

Andechs/district

– Andechs' mayor Georg Scheitz is concerned about the condition of his local roads after this winter. Especially on Andechser Straße in Erling, at the roundabout in front of the monastery car park, the road surface is breaking up over a large area. It's not an Andechs phenomenon. The head of the Gilching road maintenance department, Jürgen Neidhardt, blames this on a strong frost and thaw change last winter. Roads with a less high road surface are particularly affected, for example because they are heavily worn.

With its three districts and a total area of more than 40 square kilometers, Andechs is the largest municipality in the Starnberg district - this explains the 39 kilometers of municipal road network. The monastery community estimates 100,000 euros annually for its maintenance. “Whether we can get by with this?” Georg Scheitz isn't sure and is surprised, because Andechser Strasse was only expanded about 15 years ago, even if it didn't seem that long ago to him. However, the roundabout is used by numerous buses and mobile homes every day. And Jürgen Neidhardt also calls 15 years old – even for well-developed roads. “The useful life is ten to 15 years,” he says.

The road maintenance department in Gilching looks after a road network of 230 kilometers in the district - federal, state and district roads. Neidhardt explains that the roads in the district that he looks after are, in most cases, well developed and designed for heavy use - on the B2, for example, for 10,000 vehicles a day plus heavy goods traffic. “Little happens there.” Municipal roads, on the other hand, are generally not so elaborately developed. The road maintenance department of the State Building Authority also carries out regular route inspections. Potholes would be quickly patched with cold asphalt. It is the daily business of the road maintenance team. In the communities, the construction yards take on the removal of potholes among numerous other tasks. And this year, community streets - not just in Andechs - are particularly hard hit due to the frequent frost and thaw changes. Herrsching's construction site manager Josef Mörtl is also seeing more damage to the streets this year than usual. The Ammersee community building yard looks after around 52 kilometers of roads.

Water could seep in, especially in streets that were no longer in good condition. When there is frost, the road surfaces are literally blown open, says Neidhardt. This also partly explains large holes like those on Andechser Straße in Erling. If the mayor had his way, the best solution would be to renew the street. But the monastery community doesn't have the money for that. Other streets would have priority, the Steinrinnenweg in Erling for example. It should have been expanded last year, but had to be put on hold again this year.
