In the middle of holiday traffic, a rockslide crashed onto the road on the Alpine-Adriatic highway in northeastern Italy. Three cars were hit.
Amaro – The Italian A23 motorway, called “Autostrada Alpe-Adria” (Italian for: Alps-Adriatic Motorway), is, along with the Brenner route, the most important connection for drivers from Germany and Austria to the Adriatic. The expressway leading through Tarvisio is the continuation of the Austrian Tauern motorway Salzburg-Villach.
Italy: On the day of our return journey, the rock thunders onto the Adriatic motorway
For many who want to get to Italy's Adriatic beach resorts of Grado, Lignano or Caorle and Venice, or are holidaying in Slovenia and Croatia, the A23 is the fastest connection to the Mediterranean. During holiday periods such as Easter, the Autostrada Alpe-Adria is busy.
The motorway leads south through the narrow canal valley, in which the mountain river Fella flows. Steep rock faces rise to the left and right. On the day of departure, of all days, a rockslide occurred on this holiday route and hit the road. In the early morning of Easter Monday, near the town of Amaro, shortly before the end of the Fella Gorge, several rocks broke off from the steep wall and thundered onto the highway. The heaviest rock weighed 15 tons, fell onto the road and rolled down the central barrier.
Three cars were hit by the rocks
Three vehicles were damaged by the boulders. Miraculously, according to
telefriuli.it,
no one was injured. The large rock crumbled into several pieces as it fell. The highway was closed in both directions. Excavators cleared away the chunks and the guardrail was repaired. This caused traffic jams in holiday traffic.

and the regional civil protection of the Friuli/Venezia Giulia region carried out inspections in the mountainous area above the A23 near Amaro on Tuesday.
In the afternoon, a summit meeting of all involved bodies took place in the prefecture of Udine to take stock of the situation and agree on further steps to finally secure the scene of the accident.
Storms caused many problems in Italy
The rockslide was caused by the weekend's storms. The rains had also washed rocks free in other regions of the Italian Alps. Violent floods and mudslides raged everywhere between Montblanc and Friuli. Near Meran, rocks fell onto important thoroughfares in two places. In addition, the Adriatic route over the Plöcken Pass is closed due to a massive rock fall.
