A mysterious discovery concerns users on social media. Is it an organ? The police and the forest department are already involved.
Freiburg – Many people who encounter something unusual or macabre seek the advice of Dr. Mark Benecke. Whether it's a mummified cat ("How can I tell if my cat mummy is female or male?") or half-eaten fish carcasses on the beach ("Can anyone tell us if these are porpoises?"): The Facebook The renowned forensic biologist community likes to take part in the discussions and sometimes even gives well-founded assessments of the finds.
However, in one of the more recent cases the situation was more complicated. Thomas S. had sent photos of a strange find that his sister made on Good Friday on the side of a forest path in Freiburg via email to Benecke's fan page. “I think it’s a liver. What puzzles me is the location and the fact that the whole thing was so cleanly released,” he was quoted as saying in a Facebook post. The images show a large piece of brownish-gray tissue and the location where it was found.

Strange lump of meat found in Freiburg: police are investigating
Due to the strangeness of the find, his sister informed the police. The photos triggered a wave of reactions among Benecke fans, who expressed themselves in hundreds of comments. Many of them wanted to stick around until the matter was finally clarified. “I think it looks like a mushroom. I’m excited to see the resolution,” commented one Facebook user.
Despite numerous ideas, there was initially no solution. Thomas reported that the police and the forestry department were “combing” the forest.

that they had received a corresponding call and a patrol had taken care of the matter. They were not yet able to conclusively determine whether the pieces of meat were liver because animals had already eaten them. “However, there is reason to believe that these are the innards or organs of a wild animal (possibly a deer) that died or was shot in the area,” the police said. The examination of the pieces of meat was forwarded to the local veterinary office.

Some commenters still offered tips on how to solve the puzzle. “As a pathologist, I would like to agree with everyone and think it is a liver,” wrote one user, whose expertise is not easy to verify on Facebook. Another commenter suggested that a dog owner may have left BARF residue behind. Others suspected that the illegal disposal of slaughterhouse waste could be behind it.
There was even a discussion about whether a hunter had left the piece of meat on a bait site to attract other animals. Would a hunter use liver for this or definitely take it as a delicacy? Had he made a mistake while gutting? Did an animal drag the piece away? It will probably take a while until the meat is examined and a result is available. (anki)
