At “Cash for Rares”, Horst Lichter had to decide what to do with an exhibit whose value expert Sven Deutschmanek had estimated at zero euros.

Cologne – Such a mishap has never happened before with “Bares für Rares”: The former restaurateur Max from Oberkochen traveled with his daughter Laura to sell an “Asbach Uralt” neon sign from the 1970s, which he used to own had a counter sign in his student bar. But before the recording began, the glass insert with the brandy written on it broke when it was inserted.

“Cash for Rares”: Exhibit is “worth nothing” for expert Sven Deutschmanek

After a short round of introductions, “Cash for Rares” moderator Horst Lichter (62) asked expert Sven Deutschmanek (47) to provide his expertise on the exhibit. But he wasn't very enthusiastic about the condition of the former counter sign: "What's very, very unfortunate here is that we have this severe damage, because it is precisely these glass inserts from 'Asbach Uralt' that make up this neon sign." Only on the cast iron frame with vine leaves he had nothing to complain about. “The windows are really in a disastrous condition,” complained Deutschmanek, who has also had to judge exhibits that confused him.

Horst Lichter asked whether one pane could be glued. But this did not seem to meet the expert's requirements. So he came to the somewhat depressing assessment: “It's hard, but for me it's honestly worth nothing in this condition.” The sellers had originally wanted around 300 euros for the neon sign. If the disc had still been intact, Deutschmanek would have estimated its value at 100 to 150 euros.

“Situation that you have actually never had before”: Difficult situation for Horst Lichter at “Bares für Rares”

Given the situation, Horst Lichter seemed a bit at a loss as to what he should do now. “This is a situation that you have actually never had before,” said Deutschmanek. With a sigh, the moderator finally handed the sellers the dealer card and feared: “I'm going to get four hundred pounds of mail now, calls from everywhere... You just go over there. “The thing is worth nothing, I have nothing to expect and look what happens over there.”

As expected, the bids in the dealer room were low despite sympathy for the mishap - but at least there were some at all despite the zero euro expert estimate. In the end, Roman Runkel (63) was awarded the contract for 15 euros. The sellers were still satisfied that they didn't have to take the exhibit with them again: "It would simply be a shame to throw it away." In another case with "Cash for Rares", a dealer paid three times the price despite the damage.
