She is considered one of the most famous prisoners in Germany: RAF terrorist Daniela Klette. She already complained about her prison conditions - in vain.

Verden/Vechta – Is history repeating itself? When the first RAF terrorists were imprisoned in the 1970s, the strict prison conditions caused a stir. Ulrike Meinhof, for example, spent 238 days in an empty wing in Cologne-Ossendorf. Neon lights burned day and night in her cell, the window handle was removed - everything was painted white. Even the prison psychologist admitted that the onset of psychological and psychosomatic disorders was inevitable in the long term, Der

once reported . These and other cases quickly showed a considerable level of solidarity among the population - and brought sympathizers to the RAF. 50 years later, another terrorist from the Red Army Faction is in custody - isolated and monitored: Daniela Klette.

Video surveillance and isolation: JVA confirms that RAF terrorist Daniela Klette is a flight risk

The RAF terrorist Klette, who was caught at the end of February 2024, complained through her lawyer about the prison conditions in the Vechta women's prison. She is under video surveillance almost all day and is also completely isolated, it was said. Now an investigating judge has decided: the harsh conditions should continue. The 65-year-old remains in strict isolation from other prisoners. Video surveillance in her cell was also approved, as a spokesman for the Verden district court confirmed. A spokeswoman for the Lower Saxony Ministry of Justice also stated that the prison had come to the conclusion that there was an increased risk of absconding - a position that was supported by the court. The spokesman for the Verden district court also emphasizes: Although Klette has been separated from other inmates in the Vechta prison, there are other options for conversations.

Why is Klette in custody? Investigators accuse Klette, who was arrested in Berlin at the end of February, of attempted murder, bomb attacks and armed robbery. Like her accomplices Burkhard Garweg and Ernst-Volker Staub, who are still being sought, she belonged to the so-called third generation of the left-wing extremist RAF. The RAF declared itself disbanded in 1998 after carrying out numerous attacks and killing people until 1991. Klette is currently in custody in the women's prison in Vechta.

RAF terrorist Klette continues to enjoy “great solidarity from certain circles”

Why is there a risk of absconding? The Justice Ministry spokeswoman explained the suspected risk of escape: “One reason for this is certainly that the accused was presumably a member of the third generation of the RAF and lived underground for 30 years. In addition, she continues to receive great solidarity from certain circles and there are even calls for her release.” In addition, Garweg and Staub are still on the run, and if convicted, Klette could face a significant prison sentence. All of this distinguishes her from other pre-trial prisoners. However, there will be ongoing reviews to see whether the prison conditions continue to be justified.

Meanwhile, the head of the Lower Saxony State Criminal Police Office, Friedo de Vries, defended the work of his investigators in the search for three former RAF terrorists. “At the moment I cannot see that we have made a mistake,” de Vries told the

. On February 26th, the former RAF terrorist Daniela Klette was caught in Berlin; so-called target investigators from the LKA Lower Saxony were responsible for the operation. It later became known that she was able to warn an accomplice before her arrest. “There is always follow-up work on operations of this type,” says de Vries. “That will also be the case here, it is part of our professional work.” Large amounts of cash, gold and even military weapons were found at Klette.
