Doron Schnafer: Half a year has passed since the day when the residents took what they had, fled their homes and left their lives behind. Since then the difficulties have only piled up and increased, but we are holding on to the ground, and no one will break our spirit. Our hope is stronger than anything - and we left to return home.

Today we mark six months since the October 7 Holocaust. Rivers of words were spoken about this shocking day - the most difficult day the country has known since its foundation. A day that changed the future of Israel and the entire Middle East. A week and a half after that Shabbat, a decision was made to evacuate the city of Kiryat Shmona. Since then, our residents have stayed in more than 450 settlements throughout Israel, some of them are in more than 220 hotels and thousands of residents have preferred to rent apartments, or live with family or friends. Half a year later, and I decided that I don't want to speak in terms of disappointment or anger, I don't want to blame anyone, nor make complaints to anyone. Miramor is not a job plan. After all, nothing will ease the pain nor return the loss. Our clock continues to run forward every moment, every second, every minute, every hour and every day, week after week, month after month!

Half a year later, and we will not be able to forget the babies, children, women, men and innocent civilians who were raped, butchered, burned and slaughtered in a place that should be the most protected in the world for them. Half a year later and we can't stop crying for those hundreds of heroic soldiers - regular, permanent and reserve service who fought like lions and sacrificed their lives for us.

Half a year later, we cannot forget the brave police officers, the heroic citizens and the members of the emergency units who went out on that cursed Saturday of October 7 to help and protect innocent citizens who were caught in the eye of the storm, and acted to protect their home, their families and their neighbors.

Six months later and it is impossible not to embrace and love our champion soldiers. Those who continue to fight for us so that we can continue to carry the torch of life and pass it on from generation to generation. Six months later, we continue to offer a prayer to the one sitting on high to bring home the 134 abductees who are being held captive by Hamas in inhumane conditions. While the world is talking about humanitarian aid to a bloodthirsty population that raises and glorifies despicable murderers, our abductees are not at all in the equation. Hypocrisy for its own sake!

Half a year later and now is the time to lift up the angels of Kiryat Shmona - to the security forces, the commanders and policemen of the Kiryat Shmona station, the fire fighters, MDA, soldiers and commanders of the Hiklar and especially to the employees and managers of the municipality of Kiryat Shmona who were the first to show up for the mission, working around the clock for the residents scattered all over the country and do holy work. A huge shout out to the municipal emergency team that is in the city, far from the children, family and friends. I accompany them from the first day of the war and together we go out into the field in the midst of falls and alarms to save lives. Just salute them! And how is it possible without our companions on the road who hug us from the first moment. Our partners from the foundations, from the Jewish communities all over the world who stood by us from the first moment and accompany us to this day. What would we do without you?!

True, everyone is worthy and everyone is a champion, but for me, the real heroes are the most simple and good people there are. Six months later, I want to salute special citizens who, for me, are the heroes of the war - the residents of Kiryat Shmona! Wonderful people, war veterans who one morning were asked to evacuate their homes so that the atrocities of October 7 would not occur in the north as well.

I remember it like it was yesterday. On the morning of Friday, October 20, a few hours before Shabbat, the residents were asked to evacuate immediately. Just like the exodus from Egypt, so too in the exodus from Kiryat Shmona - people fled their homes. They didn't have time to take equipment, they didn't take enough clothing, they collected the children, got into the cars and the special transports and stormed out of the city they love. They leave behind everything that is important, especially memories and the smell of home. Time did not stop but did not bring the return home closer. the opposite. Autumn has come and gone, winter has come and gone and now we have reached spring, and summer is also upon us, and there is still no light at the end of the tunnel.

April 2024, six months after that Shabbat, and still dozens of Sukkots are standing in the city as if time has stopped. A surreal play. We were informed that on December 23 they were returning to the city, then they extended it until February, and the day before the month passed they extended the evacuation until July. Summer is coming soon and whoever left Kiryat Shmona with an umbrella, long clothes, boots and a coat, Ototo finds himself in a bathing suit at the beach.

Hotels whose entire purpose is to host vacationers for a few days of fun have become an oppressive routine and a new home for the heroes of Kiryat Shmona. Our children have nowhere to study or play. There is not the minimum privacy that every person needs. A pressure cooker that cannot be resisted, a pressure cooker that explodes in our faces every day and causes many mental problems.

If our residents are heroes, then the children of Kiryat Shmona are superheroes. Suddenly they have to make new friends, adapt to new settings, learn in an almost impossible way and reinvent themselves. Parents who were used to waking up to work and having a routine, are forced to face a complex reality. A new reality that no one prepared them for. You learn everything on the go. You learn where the nearest supermarket is, where the hairdresser, the health fund, the pharmacy, the bus stop and the children's school and kindergarten. starting from the beginning.

No less impressive superheroes are the city's veterans - the founding generation of Kiryat Shmona. Are there more heroes than them? Kiryat Shmona is everything to these people. These old heroes who never left their home, suddenly had to start all over again. If in the past a short trip outside the city was a bit of an event for them, then uprooting them from their homes is a defining event. Unfortunately, not everyone was able to withstand this change.

Everyone who lives in Kiryat Shmona, two minutes from the Lebanese border, is a kind of hero. hero of Israel! These heroes will not be mentioned in the news releases. These heroes are forgotten in the hundreds of news and flash stories that come out every day. Whoever says there are no casualties in Kiryat Shmona is not telling the truth. The soul of each of the heroes of Kiryat Shmona was damaged in one way or another. The damage cannot be assessed at this time. It is impossible to know what goes through the mind of each girl and boy.

For Kiryat Shmona veterans, the city is everything, and suddenly they had to start all over again. A man on a scooter in the empty Kiryat Shmona/Reuven Castro

At night because of the situation, will not appear in any casualty list. So is a girl with anxiety and people who can't sleep at night for fear of missiles or penetration. These heroes will continue to bear the scars of the war alone, deal with its consequences on their own and try to overcome the mental damage and the immense pain on their own. They will not appear in the national statistics, but in the private list I am preparing of the war heroes, the residents of Kiryat Shmona will be first.

The time has come for us to start calling the residents of Kiryat Shmona by a different name, not evacuees, not displaced persons but heroes. We who grew up in shelters, faced terrorist infiltrations, suffered shelling and incessant firing of Katyusha missiles - we did not give up our Kiryat Shmona and despite all the difficulty we started a family, raised children and established our home in the city we love very much. Our heroes left the city to sanctify their lives and to allow the IDF to be busy at the front and not in taking care of the home front. We went to return!

What happened to our grandparents, our parents and us, now also happens to our children. This is the price we pay for sitting on the northern border Heroes who raised generations in an unimaginable security reality and held on to the ground at all costs. And we are still holding on to the ground. The evacuation was only meant for us to return. That we return healthy and intact to continue settling and building our Kiryat Shmona. True, there are also moments of breaking, but these moments are few compared to the moments The many of faith and hope. You will not find us crying over our fate. We are strong and no one will break our spirit because we are the heroes of the war.
