Puchheim warns against the illegal scaring of rooks

2024-04-07T07:24:27.311Z

Highlights: Puchheim warns against the illegal scaring of rooks. Rooks are often considered a nuisance, but are protected species. If unauthorized people are observed scaring away the protected animals, they risk being reported and punished with a fine of up to 50,000 euros. The city of Puchheim has been trying to prevent this for years through cost-intensive, controlled measures and is therefore calling for all illegal deterrence to be stopped. The government of Upper Bavaria established so-called taboo zones in which no measures are permitted.

Puchheim - Although their song might not suggest it, rooks are songbirds. They are protected by the Federal Nature Conservation Act.

Their breeding areas, which were originally in open landscapes with groups of trees, can now be found almost exclusively within cities and towns. They are therefore often perceived as disruptive and demanded to be discouraged.

The problem can increase

This is also the case in Puchheim, where there has been a rook breeding colony since 2008. There is also a large breeding colony in Olching, and smaller ones in other neighboring communities. In exceptional cases, deterrence measures can be approved by the government of Upper Bavaria. However, these measures can lead to the breeding colonies splitting up and thereby increasing the problem, which is why the colonies in the surrounding area are considered together.

Controlled deterrence may occur in problematic peripheral areas

In order to avoid fragmentation, the government of Upper Bavaria established so-called taboo zones in which no measures are permitted. In Puchheim, the Schopflachwäldchen area has been designated as one of three taboo zones in the community network for comprehensive rook management, as there is a long-standing and stable colony here. For this reason, deterrence measures may only be carried out in the Schopflachwäldchen in the problematic peripheral areas on Allinger Straße. Apart from the taboo zone in the Schopflachwäldchen, splinter colonies in the entire local area may be controlled in a controlled manner by removing nests and using birds of prey.

Prevent splitting

Last year, however, illegal deterrence measures in the taboo zone led to the animals looking for alternative locations in the local area and in neighboring communities. This meant considerable additional work for the falconer. For example, it was only with great effort that it was possible to prevent the rooks near Gernerplatz from breeding. This did not work in Puchheim-Ort. A small splinter colony formed there. Illegal deterrence leads to fragmentation that is difficult to control, often associated with an increase in the number of individuals and thus the overall problem.

There is a risk of high penalties

The city of Puchheim has been trying to prevent this for years through cost-intensive, controlled measures and is therefore calling for all illegal deterrence to be stopped. If unauthorized people are observed scaring away the protected animals, they risk being reported and punished with a fine of up to 50,000 euros. But it's not just illegal deterrence that poses a problem. What's also critical is that there are obviously constant feedings of rooks. The city of Puchheim urgently asks that you refrain from doing this as well, as no more rooks should be attracted.
