Warm air from the south and bright sunshine: According to preliminary information from the German Weather Service, in many places in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia it was warmer than ever before in early April.
Magdeburg/Halle/Leipzig - According to preliminary figures from the German Weather Service (DWD), temperature records were broken almost across the board in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia on Saturday. In all three countries, temperatures rose above 25 degrees, as meteorologist Florian Engelmann said in Leipzig. “That is far too warm for the time of year.” A summer day in April could happen. “The fact that we are now going on the hunt for records again fits in with the picture of the last few weeks and months, in which it was often much too warm.”
The warmest corner was the Thuringian Basin, said Engelmann. The thermometer in Jena showed 27.8 degrees Celsius, as the DWD announced on Saturday evening. That is well above the previous high for April 6th, which was measured in the city in 1961 at 25.6 degrees. Jena was followed by Artern with 26.9 degrees.
In southern Saxony-Anhalt it was also warmer than ever before on April 6th. Osterfeld (Burgenlandkreis) topped the rankings with 26.4 degrees. In the area, the previous daily maximum of 20.8 degrees in 2020 was significantly exceeded. The 25 degree mark was also broken in other places such as Bad Lauchstädt, Jeßnitz, Quedlinburg, Köthen, Naumburg, Bernburg and Aschersleben.
In Halle on Saturday some people took the opportunity to go swimming in the Heidebad. The water temperature was 12 degrees, an employee said when asked. Some children also took the opportunity to swim. Beach loungers, palm trees and the summer lounge invited you to linger. When asked, ice cream parlors in Magdeburg reported brisk business. It was said to be about as full as on a normal summer day.
According to the DWD, the warmest place in Saxony was Dresden-Hosterwitz. The 26.3 degrees measured there were just above the previous peak of 25.8 degrees from 1961. New peak values for April 6th were also reached in the Erzgebirge. At 26.1 degrees, Aue was well above its previous record of 22.2 degrees from 1982.
According to the weather service, high “Olli” and storm low “Timea” are responsible for the unusually warm weather. Both together pumped subtropical warm air from the southwest towards Germany. It will stay warm and summery until Monday. After that it will get significantly cooler again. In the second half of the new week, the maximum values only fluctuated between 10 and 15 degrees.
