Israel has withdrawn its troops from the south of the Gaza Strip, notably from the town of Khan Younes, after months of fighting against the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, the Israeli army and military official said on Sunday.
“Today, Sunday, April 7, the 98th Commando Division of the Israeli Army completed its mission in Khan Yunis. The division left the Gaza Strip in order (…) to prepare for future operations,” the army said in a statement sent to AFP. Asked by the agency whether this meant that all troops had left the southern Gaza Strip, a military official replied: "Yes."
Negotiations underway in Cairo
This decision comes in a tense diplomatic context, while the military intervention in Gaza and the humanitarian situation there are increasingly criticized by the international community.
Negotiations are taking place at the same time in Cairo between the different parties to find a solution to the conflict which has pitted Hamas against the Israeli state since the attack on October 7.
