The Wendelsteinhöhle usually doesn't open until May, but due to the mild weather it was open at the beginning of April.
Wendelstein - The extremely mild weather makes it possible: Germany's highest show cave on the Wendelstein has been open to visitors since Thursday, April 4th. This was announced by the Wendelsteinbahn. “Depending on the degree of icing and the amount of snow on the mountain, it can sometimes take until May or even June before the cave is accessible again,” says Florian Obermair from the Wendelsteinbahn.

The highest show cave in Germany is in Bavaria: discovered in 1864
In winter, when there is ice and snow, the cave is closed to visitors. Only experienced speleologists can then climb them - with crampons. The cave entrance is at 1,711 meters and is located directly behind the mountain station of the cog railway. The approximately 500 meter long part of the show cave, which guests can visit independently, leads to the so-called Cave Cathedral. Four interactive themed stations provide facts about speleology. Guided tours with expert guidance will be available again from June 1st.
Wendelstein Cave is a “geological sensation”
The highest show cave in Germany in the belly of the Wendelstein was discovered in 1864 by a citizen from Bayerischzell, according to the Wendelsteinbahn website. The cave is part of an entire cave system. “In expert circles it is considered a geological sensation because its remarkable altitude (1,711 m), far above the current river level, suggests that it must have been formed before the Alps were folded,” it continues.
