"We are on track to reach our 2030 decarbonisation targets and our emissions are falling: in the first three quarters of last year, greenhouse gas emissions in the EU fell by 5.5%, compared to an increase of just over 1% globally." This was stated by the European Energy Commissioner, Kadri Simson, speaking at the National Press Club in Canberra, Australia. “As we continue to reduce emissions we must ensure that our efforts to tackle climate change, in particular through our internal carbon market, are not offset by carbon leaks,” he added, recalling the role of the carbon border tax introduced by Brussels to avert the risk of companies relocating outside the EU where there are less stringent climate constraints.
