During the forty years of my career, I was in combat without French society being aware of the war. This fight did not exist for anyone because war should never exist again. In reality, it never disappeared. Between "war", understood in the strategic sense of the term, and what was qualified as "operations", there is a difference in definition, but, on the ground, for the soldier who experiences it, it is the same thing.
It's the same density of combat, the same wounded, the same deaths. Many Americans who landed in 1944 never had a physical confrontation with an enemy; conversely, many French soldiers experienced fire without their country being officially “at war”.
