For several months, the threat of an Israeli offensive has hovered over Rafah, on the Egyptian border, where 1.5 million Palestinians have taken refuge since the start of the war. Benyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli Prime Minister, reaffirmed his determination to eradicate Hamas “across the entire Gaza Strip, including in Rafah”, a city which he presents as the last great bastion of the Islamist movement.
The Israeli army announced on Sunday the withdrawal of its troops from the south of the Palestinian enclave. They are preparing “to continue their missions” on the border with Egypt, declared Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
