A complicated procedure must first be carried out before the famous Ayinger maypole reaches its legendary length. The boys have now dealt with that.
Aying
– At first glance you might think that the Ayinger maypole is on fire. This smoking affair is one of the special features of the Ayinger maypole. As is well known, the maypole is the largest in the entire area, if not in all of Bavaria, i.e. the world. In order to achieve this size, the so-called earth trunk is connected to the shifter.
Bonded under tension
This is done using precision carpentry work; the two trees are first glued together under tension at the connection points, and two steel sheets are attached to the outer sides over the entire connection. And finally, one after the other, five forged, glowing iron rings, each adapted to the diameter of the tree, are pressed over the connection point of the spliced tree with hammer blows. When the position is reached, the rings are cooled with water. This creates smoke, the rings contract and the connection becomes inseparable. Putting on the rings is the most exciting work on this giant tree and requires a great deal of specialist knowledge and skill. That's why the boys receive great support from the local master craftsmen, who provide them with advice and support. Due to the rarity of this maypole practice, there are no operating instructions on how to build a maypole available to purchase.
