During the talks in Cairo last night, the head of the CIA Bill Burns presented a new proposal designed to try and bridge the gaps between Israel and Hamas on the way to a deal for the release of the abductees, said three senior Israeli officials who are familiar with the matter.
why is it important
The Israeli officials stated that the new American proposal is now being discussed by Israel and by Hamas. While Israel is inclined to accept the American proposal, it is not yet clear whether Hamas will agree to it.
Behind the Scenes
A senior Israeli official said that the new American proposal is trying to get Hamas to agree to be flexible in terms of the number and identity of the prisoners it wants to release from the Israeli prison, as well as to provide the list of 40 live hostages in its hands, in exchange for Israeli concessions regarding the return of Palestinians to the northern Gaza Strip.
"The American pressure is very important to achieve a deal. The proposal discussed in Cairo bridges the gaps in a way that has never happened before," said the spokesman of the Qatari Foreign Ministry, Majed Al-Ansari, to the BBC network.

Two senior Israeli officials said that there was progress in the talks in Cairo. However, they stressed that obstacles still remain and further talks will be needed.
The spokesman for the Qatari Foreign Ministry said: "We are encouraged by the talks that took place in Cairo. We are not in the last news, but I am more optimistic than I was a few days ago."

Senior Israeli officials said that the political-security cabinet will meet tomorrow evening to receive an update on the status of the negotiations for the release of the abductees.
