Whether the prophecy of a bomb explosion or a flood: many explanations have emerged for the meaning of a solar eclipse.

Munich – A total solar eclipse is a phenomenon that is rarely observed. When the moon is exactly between the earth and the sun, gods hunt or become hunted themselves. Dragons are driven away or peace is made - at least that's what myths surrounding the phenomenon claim. And some of them have developed over the years.

Myths about the solar eclipse: Dragons will be chased away

In China, a superstition says that during an eclipse the sun is devoured by a dragon or other monster. To drive the monster away, as much noise as possible was made on the ground. Superstition has made it into modern astronomy. Kite points or node points denote the interfaces between the lunar orbit and the Earth's orbit.

Solar Eclipse: Demon hunts the sun and moon

Indian mythology says that during a solar eclipse, the demon Rahu hunts the sun and moon. Rahu is said to have drunk the nectar of immortality, which the sun and moon told the god Vishnu. He cut off Rahu's head in a flash. Only the head became immortal. Since then, Rahu has been chasing the sun and moon out of anger at the betrayal. When he reaches them, he devours them both, but the celestial bodies reappear at the open neck. Devout Hindus try to stay indoors during a solar eclipse and avoid eating. Some take ritual baths to cleanse themselves of possible consequences.

Fighting gods and hungry toads – solar eclipse myths

For the Inuit, a solar eclipse means a previous battle between the sun goddess Malina and her brother, the moon god Anningan. If Anningan chases after his sister and catches up with her, a lunar eclipse will occur.

Peace through the solar eclipse

The Greek historian Herodotus reports about peace that came about through the solar eclipse. During the battle between the western Iranian Medes and the Lydians of Asia Minor in 585 BC. In 200 BC it suddenly became dark during the day. The troops on both sides, who had been fighting each other for six years, paused and decided to bury the hatchet.

False prophecies for Paris

The prophecy of the Parisian fashion designer Paco Rabanne, however, ended in an embarrassing story. At the 1999 solar eclipse, he drew ridicule when the esotericist predicted the Russian space station Mir would crash into Paris under the “Black Sun.” He also predicted the explosion of a plutonium bomb that was supposedly on board. The space station crashed two years later, but in a planned and controlled manner into the sea.

Doomsday predictions due to solar eclipse: sect built bunkers

Some sects expect the end of the world to occur during a solar eclipse. Followers of the “Universal and Human Energy” sect of the Vietnamese Luong Minh Dang worked diligently on a bunker for the solar eclipse in 1999. They predicted a flood on the day of the celestial event and built the bunker on a hill near the Spanish city of Tarragona. As is well known, the excitement was in vain.
