A maxi unrolled tablecloth in Piazza Unità d'Italia at lunchtime to eat together and to "share your food with those who don't have": this is the flash mob created by school students in Trieste in view of the 50th Social Week of Catholics in Italy , scheduled for next July. Shortly after 1pm, over a thousand young people - according to data released by the organizers - sat on both sides of the tablecloth and, after a quick lunch, donated food items intended for poor families.
The tablecloth, 1.80 meters wide and 90 meters long, was sewn by approximately 2 thousand school students of various levels, who assembled pieces of used fabric, significant for their personal history. So there are those who brought to class a corner of their grandmother's dressing gown, those who bring an old sweatshirt, those who are passionate about water sports, a piece of sailing, those who bring fabrics from Africa. The initiative was promoted by the Science and Faith laboratory of the Diocese of Trieste and recalls the theme of the Social Week: 'At the heart of democracy.
Participating between history and future'. The objective was in fact to raise young people's awareness of brotherhood, sharing and participation.
"There is also another metaphor - observed the bishop of Trieste, Monsignor Enrico Trevisi, in the square to greet the young people - this could be the tablecloth of an altar which tells us that God wants everyone to have access to this table.
We can be that hand of God that wants to reach everyone, sharing with everyone".
