Highlights: 4-hour general strike of CGIL and UIL begins, 8 in construction and in Emilia-Romagna. Accidents at work are a "great social plague" that "requires maximum unity" "In Italy, work has been devalued too much and laws introduced in recent years are favoring a model of doing business based on exploitation," says CGIL leader Maurizio Landini. "The CISL absent? Ask those who decided not to strike in front of the dead. We want to unite" says Uil general secretary Pierpaolo Bombardieri, who will be in Rome for an assembly with workers in the transport sector, inside the Atac depot of Grottarossa. The protest will last four hours for the entire private sector and eight hours for construction and for Emilia Romagna, an extension decided after the serious workplace accident that occurred in Suviana. Accidents at work are a "great social plague" that "requires maximum unity among all political, institutional and social subjects and does not allow demagogic, populist and incendiary tones that divide people and irresponsibly pit workers against each other the others". This was said by the general secretary of the CISL, Luigi Sbarra, speaking to ANSA and commenting on the declarations of the leader of the CGIL, Maurizio Landini, on the CISL that he had decided not to strike in the face of deaths in Suviana. "Maybe Maurizio is distracted - he said - yesterday the CISL proclaimed a 4-hour national strike in the Enel group".

"In Italy, work has been devalued too much and laws introduced in recent years are favoring a model of doing business based on exploitation. On contracts, subcontracts and profit at all costs. A model that damages workers, who die and get injured, but it also damages the country. Enough must be said." The secretary of the CGIL Maurizio Landini said this from Brescia, present at the demonstration called for the general strike. "The CISL absent? Ask those who decided not to strike in front of the dead. We want to unite" explained Landini.

The strike proclaimed by the CGIL and UIL in support of job security, for a "fair tax reform" and for "a new social model of doing business" has begun: the protest will last four hours for the entire private sector and eight hours for construction and for Emilia Romagna, an extension decided after the serious workplace accident that occurred in Suviana.

- Events and initiatives are planned at a territorial level throughout Italy. The general secretary of the CGIL, Maurizio Landini, will conclude the demonstration in Brescia while the general secretary of the Uil, Pierpaolo Bombardieri, will be in Rome where he will hold an assembly, in particular with workers in the transport sector, inside the Atac depot of Grottarossa.

As regards transport, the unions explain, the strike will be organized at a territorial level for public transport. In rail transport, there is a stop for the staff in charge of running trains from 9.01am to 1pm. Guaranteed trains, communicated by the railway companies as minimum services, are insured. The stop also affects rail freight transport. The staff assigned to railway contracts both on the ground (cleaning trains, stations, offices and ancillary services) and traveling (catering, cleaning on board the train and accompanying night trains) will stop for the second half-shift, including April 11th . In local public transport, the 4-hour stop in most cases does not coincide with that of trains.

In Rome the strike is expected from 8pm to midnight; in Turin from 6pm to 10pm; in Genoa from 1pm to 5pm; in Bologna from 1pm to 4.30pm; in Florence from 6pm to 10pm, in Naples from 9am to 1pm, in Bari from 7.30pm to 11.30pm For taxis and rentals with driver there are 4 hours of stoppage divided within the service shifts and guaranteeing the minimum services required by the sector discipline.

In maritime transport, the staff on board the ship stays for the first half of the day and the traveling staff of the ferries connecting with the islands and international shipping for the first four hours (excluding essential lines and services).

Staff in the freight transport and logistics sector, ports, cableways, funeral transport and fire guards will go on strike for the first 4 hours of the work shift. For the last four hours of each work shift, there will be a stop for road workers on motorways and Anas (the minimum functional services to ensure road traffic safety will be guaranteed). The entire air transport sector is excluded from membership. In Milan the prefect has ordered ATM metro, tram and bus operators to work in local public transport.
