Tim Mälzer is a popular television chef and known for his unfiltered sayings. But it was precisely these that now became his downfall.
Hamburg – Tim Mälzer (53) regularly delights viewers of the RTL show “Kitchen Impossible” with his relaxed manner. Now there was hardly a more personal episode of the successful cooking show than this: The cooking took place in Hamburg - Mälzer's home. The 53-year-old showed his unusually private side - but his overestimation of himself was his downfall.
“Kitchen Impossible” in Hamburg: Tim Mälzer gambles away at the cooking challenge
The result was a real declaration of love for Hamburg for star chef Tim Mälzer - he wanted to cook victory for the Hanseatic city. His opponent was no stranger: Already in 2023, the Austrian Edi Frauneder (46) cooked against the 53-year-old and lost by 0.1 points. The (renewed) cooking duel took place on Sunday (April 7, 2024). To start, Mälzer had to prepare shrimp pasta. The culinary creator is none other than chef Fabio Hoebel (37) – by the way, a good friend of TV chef Mälzer.
According to Mälzer’s statement, “Pasta with crabs. What could possibly go wrong?” – he approached the cooking task in an unusually relaxed manner. And the chef also took a noticeable amount of time when shopping for the ingredients. His reason: “We are here in Hamburg. What is supposed to happen? I go to my suppliers and chat with them.” But that’s not all – he made a stop along the way. The reason: a caviar tasting.
He ended up showing up at Hobel's restaurant two hours late to recreate the dish. No trace of excuses or hecticness. A mistake, as it later turned out, because the pasta part in particular caused the chef a lot of trouble. He left the shrimp peeling to others - he no longer had time for it. But a blessing in disguise: the test eaters' verdict was good. Mälzer achieved an average grade of 6.7 points. However, there was some scolding from friend Fabio Haebel (37). He thought Mälzer had failed to cook the way he cooks at home. With lots of flavor and few ingredients.
RTL “Kitchen Impossible”: Tim Mälzer fails at Hamburger Franzbrötchen
But the highs were far from over – on the contrary. With a view to the next task, Mälzer emphasized: “This is a Hamburg national shrine and that is baking.” So the tasting of the Hamburg specialty Franzbrötchen was skipped. And that was a mistake - because he didn't like the fact that sourdough is mixed into the flour for the Franzbrötchen recipe at Café Luise. Although his Franzbrötchen looked pretty, they were far from the original. Mälzer earned correspondingly few points. In the end he lost to Frauneder by two points. The result weighed heavily on Mälzer's stomach, so he summed it up: “I shot myself in the foot.”
By the way: TV chef Tim Mälzer brazenly cheated on “Kitchen Impossible”: He wanted to trick the jury because he was missing an important ingredient.
