Belgium: against shootings, a Belgian elected official proposes to ban... scooters at night

2024-04-12T15:42:16.638Z

Highlights: Vincent De Wolf, mayor of the Belgian municipality of Etterbeek, wants to ban electric scooters between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m to fight drug trafficking. “It’s a very easy and quick way because you can use paths, small paths, sidewalks…” explains Vincent De Wolf to our colleagues at Bruzz. He also wants the measure to be extended to the entire region, by being adopted by the Conference of Mayors or by the Minister-President. The mayor of Anderlecht, Fabrice Cumps, believes that it must remain local. The measure is already in force in part of its municipality, coupled with a speed limit of 10 km/h in the Peterbos district. The ban is expected to be implemented by the end of the year, with a possible extension to the rest of the country in the spring of 2015. It is expected that the ban will be implemented in the Belgian capital, Brussels.

“The perpetrators who flee very often do so by electric scooter.”

This is the observation of Mayor Vincent De Wolf, stated on the microphone of the Brussels media

Bruzz

, and justifying his desire to ban two-wheeled vehicles at night.

Increasingly subject to drug trafficking and the shootings that accompany it, Brussels is trying as best it can to contain the illicit drug trade, particularly from Antwerp. Due to their practicality, electric scooters seem to be the ideal vehicle for traffickers.

“Choose safety”

“It’s a very easy and quick way because you can use paths, small paths, sidewalks…”

explains Vincent De Wolf to our colleagues at Bruzz

. “As shootings take place at night, they should be prohibited between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.,”

he adds.

Although he knows that young people and workers are also used to electric scooters, the Belgian elected official nevertheless says he wants to

“choose safety”

and

“protect people’s lives”

. He also wants the measure to be extended to the entire region, by being adopted by the Conference of Mayors or by the Minister-President.

A position contested by Fabrice Cumps, mayor of the municipality of Anderlecht, who, without questioning the merits of the measure, believes that it must remain local. Already in force in part of its municipality, it is coupled with a speed limit of 10 km/h in the Peterbos district.
