The socialist parliamentarian and former mayor of Ponferrada (León), Olegario Ramón, was attacked this Thursday afternoon in the town when he was leaving the socialist headquarters. The attack was carried out by two men who were demonstrating in front of the municipal PSOE meeting place. The individuals insulted him, shook him, punched him and kicked him several times before being identified by the Police. The perpetrators of the violent action belong to far-right groups that usually gather in front of the party headquarters. The PSOE has condemned the events while Olegario Ramón has had to go to a hospital, with minor injuries, and then to a police station to file a complaint.
The affected person relates what happened like this: “The aggression was mild, several kicks and a wound to the leg. He slapped me and my finger hurts, it was very unpleasant.” The politician explains that after a meeting between colleagues to address neighborhood meetings, he went to his car, parked near the “eight extreme right-wing people” gathered on the street. When addressing them, a person with a megaphone said “that he was provoking” and when Ramón received insults and threats he took out his cell phone to record the sequence. “As I continued and didn't stop, I took out my cell phone to record it and another person slapped me and threw the cell phone away and when I went to pick it up he kicked me several times and said various atrocities and threats,” the socialist told EL. We try not to get involved in provocations so that there is no mess, but today it happened," laments the affected person, who calls for "calm" to avoid scenes like these: "We have to get down to tension, we are constantly tensioning in the Cortes, Congress or City Councils and it moves to the street and what happens happens. We have to stop confronting people. "I am very worried, I have three children and I think about them and the path we have taken since Trumpism triumphed and has spread."
Both in Ponferrada and in the capital León, there have been frequent meetings promoted by the extreme right, even with the attendance of Vox officials in front of the socialist headquarters, without so far having resulted in coups like these. The agents, Cendón describes after his conversation with Ramón, came immediately and identified the two individuals. The former mayor of Ponferrada went to the regional hospital with “wounds in his hand and legs” after the punches and kicks and then went to a police station to file complaints against his attackers.
The central PSOE has condemned the attack on social networks: “The Federal Executive Commission of the PSOE condemns the aggression suffered by our colleague Olegario Ramón, President of the Regional Council of El Bierzo and former mayor of Ponferrada, by two individuals who participated in the concentration of far-right that is held daily in front of the PSOE headquarters in Ponferrada.” The section of Castilla y León, the first of the PP and Vox coalition, has joined this defense of his colleague and shown its rejection. “These events are nothing more than the fire of hatred that the extreme right has been spreading in institutions and the media,” the party has announced on behalf of its regional leader, Luis Tudanca. “They will not silence us because we democrats are more fighting for coexistence and respect,” Tudanca stressed. Cendón reaffirms this condemnation and adds that the socialists are going to promote “motions for Vox to condemn the events, hate speech encourages these violent mobilizations.”
