Konrad Brummer helped countless people to have a worthy farewell, and now the head of the funeral home of the same name from Forstern died unexpectedly shortly after his 75th birthday.

Forstern - Brummer's mission was to provide helpful support to grieving people during the time of farewell, as can be read on the company's homepage. The trained carpenter, who worked at the Gaigl carpentry shop in Forstern for 30 years, only found his true calling in working as an undertaker, as he himself writes. Due to the early death of his wife Irmgard, he was particularly able to empathize with the feelings of those left behind.

He founded the funeral home 30 years ago after helping an acquaintance with a few funerals. Increasing back problems no longer allowed him to do the heavy carpentry work, so Brummer took the step of becoming self-employed. At first, the newly qualified undertaker worked alone with a few temporary assistants on call. Daughter Angela took over the office, and her brother Christian also worked in the business.

Almost a year after the company was founded, his wife Irmgard died, and Brummer had to manage the business and, at the same time, the large farm with 20 horses. “Dad was a workaholic, there was hardly a weekend for him, he lived for work,” says daughter Angela.

The company slowly made a name for itself over the years, contracts were signed with the parishes and the company grew increasingly. Owner Brummer ran his business alone until the end, but a new manager has now been appointed. “The company will definitely continue to run as usual, as my father wanted,” assures daughter Angela.

The father was absolutely helpful, a sociable person with a dry sense of humor who took little time for himself, according to his daughter's characterization. The hard-working craftsman had a special passion for the sheep on the farm, which he enjoyed looking after. Son Christian has now taken over the farming, but his father was happy to help there.

Grandpa also enjoyed his three grandchildren between the ages of twelve and 25. The lifelong football fan also enjoyed watching the games on television and talking shop with his grandson Stephan.

Konrad Brummer found new happiness with his partner Renate more than 25 years ago. Both Renate and her daughter Tina supported the undertaker as best they could in his company. Renate Hanel wrote obituaries at the weekend, daughter Tina Lanzl is responsible for the advice.

At first, Brummer liked to travel with his new partner, but later he often didn't have the time, says Lanzl. For her, the undertaker was part of the family, even though he was also her boss. “We got along very well,” she says.

Increasing heart problems made an operation necessary after Christmas, from which Brummer recovered, but the 75-year-old never woke up from the anesthesia for another operation. His relatives were by his side until the end and were able to say goodbye to him. Now the employees of the Brummer company face a difficult journey when they accompany their boss on his final journey.

The Requiem is today, Friday, at 2 p.m. in the Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary in Tading. The funeral will then take place in Forstern.
