Forty-three passengers from a cable car remained suspended on Saturday morning April 13 above the void in southern Turkey following the collapse of a pylon which left one person dead, rescuers announced. The accident, which occurred around 6:00 p.m. Friday on the heights of the large seaside resort of Antalya, also left 10 injured, according to Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca.
One of the cabins of the Sarisu-Tünektepe cable car broke under the weight of the impact, causing its passengers to fall into a rocky area. 128 passengers spread across 16 cabins have been evacuated since Friday evening, while 43 are still waiting to be rescued, Turkey's public disaster management agency (Afad) said on Saturday morning.
Seven helicopters and more than 500 rescuers were dispatched to the scene, according to authorities. An investigation has been opened to clarify the causes of the accident, announced the Turkish Minister of Justice.
