There is still real summer weather in Bavaria with temperatures at the 30 degree mark. But winter returns in the middle of the week - with lots of fresh snow.
Munich – Hard to believe on this real summer weekend, but the snow will soon be returning to Bavaria. The temperatures on Saturday and Sunday are heading towards midsummer. In Regensburg, Sunday broke the 27 degree mark. In the area surrounding Munich, the German Weather Service (DWD) forecasts 26 degrees on Sunday. On Saturday the temperatures will be similarly summery.
Midsummer weekend with 27 degrees and a clear UV warning
A dream. Can go on forever, right? High Peter is responsible for the summer weekend and will continue to lie broadly over the Free State until Sunday evening. However, in conjunction with an ozone layer that is far too thin for this time of year, this also results in high UV pollution. The DWD therefore clearly warns against spending too long outside:
“The ozone layer is too thin for this time of year. As a result, UV radiation reaches unusually high levels during the day. Protective measures are required. At midday you should look for the shade. When in the sun, a shirt, sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat are recommended.”
Change in weather at the start of the week: Monday already mixed, Tuesday really cold
But from Monday the radiation will no longer be a problem. The temperature is falling rapidly and in Bavaria only reaches peak values of 16 degrees in Nuremberg and 18 degrees in Regensburg and Munich. All this with lots of rain and wind. On Tuesday the maximum values are 11 degrees in Nuremberg, 12 degrees in Regensburg and 10 degrees in Munich.
Snowfall limit drops to 600 meters thanks to “cold air surge”.
According to DWD meteorologist Tobias Reinartz, this is due to a “surge of cold air” that a storm is driving from Iceland towards the North Sea and then to Central Europe. And that also causes a real onset of winter at medium and high altitudes. According to the current DWD forecast, the snowfall line will fall to 800 meters on Wednesday night and to 600 meters on Thursday night.
Significant amounts of fresh snow are expected with temperatures below zero even during the day
In the mountains it can reach minus six degrees. Even during the day, temperatures at higher altitudes may well remain well below freezing. There is also a lot of precipitation and storms. This means that you can still expect significant amounts of fresh snow in lower altitudes, such as southern Upper Bavaria or the Bavarian Vorwald. Here is the forecast for Mittenwald:
Around ten centimeters of fresh snow in the foothills of the Alps
The count shows around four centimeters per day on Wednesday on Thursday. According to the current forecast, twelve centimeters of snow could fall in Obersdorf, but a few centimeters of snow will also fall in Zwiesel in the Bavarian Forest. It is always important to know here: concrete snow forecasts are among the most unreliable because only slight temperature fluctuations can make a big difference.
Bavaria's weather forecast also points towards winter in the long term
Now, as we all know, April does what it wants and then next weekend it will be summer again? Unfortunately no. The winter low has come to stay for now. Meteorologist Reinartz: “As things stand, a return to early summer is not up for debate. As far as the seasons are concerned, there is clarity in this regard.” Namely: clarity on winter.
