“Like an earthquake”: in Antibes, seven balconies of the same building collapse

2024-04-15T12:21:53.640Z

Highlights: Around 8 p.m., the seven balconies of a facade of the building adjoining his, in the Vauban residence, in Antibes (Alpes-Maritimes), suddenly collapsed. Miraculously, no one was injured. The building was immediately evacuated and a security order issued for 24 apartments. A structural study must also make it possible to rule out any risk of recurrence in this building and the ten others in the residence, the exterior appearance of which appears, at first glance, rather healthy. The causes of this disaster remain unknown. A security order will be issued to this effect by the town hall services for the 24 apartments in the building. In total, 39 people were evacuated. Nearly ten of them will be rehoused by city services. “Everyone is anxious. We are still a little afraid that the same thing will happen to us,” says Dolores, who has lived in this “well-maintained” residence for 28 years.

Dolores was at home watching television when it happened on Sunday evening.

“The windows were closed, so we didn't really hear the sound of the collapse. We felt it more, it was like an earthquake

,” she says. Around 8 p.m., the seven balconies of a facade of the building adjoining his, in the Vauban residence, in Antibes (Alpes-Maritimes), suddenly collapsed. The first on the second is so on, following an impressive domino effect.

On site Sunday evening, 33 firefighters were urgently mobilized, supported by thirteen engines and some specialized reinforcements. In total, 39 people were evacuated. Nearly ten of them will be rehoused by city services.

Miraculously, no residents of the tower were on their balconies at the time. There are therefore no injuries to report. As a safety measure, the building was still evacuated. A security order will be issued to this effect by the town hall services for the 24 apartments in the building. Especially since on the other side of it, seven other balconies are in turn threatening to collapse.

“We are waiting for answers”

For the moment, the causes of this disaster remain unknown. Expertise must be carried out for this purpose. A structural study must also make it possible to rule out any risk of recurrence in this building and the ten others in the residence, the exterior appearance of which appears, at first glance, rather healthy.

“Everyone is anxious. We are still a little afraid that the same thing will happen to us,”

continues Dolores, who has lived in this

“well-maintained”

residence for 28 years.

“It’s true that we are a little disconcerted by what happened. There were still many curious people in front of the building this morning. We are of course waiting for answers, particularly from the trustee!”

, agrees Bernard, who lives at the other end of the residence and who says he heard nothing on Sunday evening.
