Petershausen – And then it actually rained 99 balloons. The Petershausen brass band saved this surprise gag for their first encore at the acclaimed concert on Saturday evening. To the 80s hit by Nena in a brass band outfit, the balloons floated down from a device on the ceiling of the Petershausen multi-purpose hall and thrilled the around 300 listeners.

40 musicians aged 15 to 83

The choice of this piece of music was programmatic. This year the brass band is celebrating its 99th anniversary. Popular bands like “La Brass Banda” or “Monobo Son” have shown the way: brass music doesn’t have to sound old-fashioned, but can also be fresh and exciting.

There has been a real brass music hype in recent years, and the Petershausen brass band also seems to have committed itself to this spirit. When conductor Katrin Czerny entered the stage, she first took off her shoes and then conducted the entire evening barefoot. With its 40 musicians aged 15 to 83, it impressively showed how diverse brass music can sound.

Spring concert by the Petershausen brass band: music ranges from classical to pop

The program ranged from classical music to traditional tunes to modern film music and well-known hits. All the musicians selected the pieces together and rehearsed them for about two months. The evening was led by clarinetist Katharina Piller and trumpeter Manfred Hildner in a funny and heartwarmingly cheeky manner. The “classic” part of the evening began with the “Figaro March” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. It continued accordingly with a significantly shortened version of the late romantic opera “Hansel and Gretel” that was rearranged for brass music.

Moderator Manfred Hildner then appeared concerned and thoughtful. “How is everything supposed to continue?” he asked the group in view of the current wars and crises in the world. His suggestion: not to try to improve the world with big things, but to start in your own life and in your immediate environment. This led to the thematically appropriate piece “Confidence” by Tobias C. Roggors. This was followed by “Zeitenwende” by Kurt Gäble.

Before the break, enthusiasm broke out when the well-known “Bozen Mountaineer March” by Sepp Tanzer was played. During the South Tyrolean national anthem, many concertgoers sang along to the text printed in the program. To attract the audience back to their seats, artificial fog was created and part of the band played the well-known theme of the song “Seven Nation Army” by the American rock band “The White Stripes”.

Between film music from “Star Trek”, “James Bond” and “Dick and Doof”, the evening's moderators honored the brass band's drummer, Daniel Birkmaier. The young musician had recently acquired the bronze musician achievement badge from the Music Association of Upper and Lower Bavaria.

New members are introduced

Hildner also introduced two young newcomers to the band: the brothers Martin and Korbinian Gnadler on trombone and trumpet. After the Latin American rhythms of the piece “Under the Boardwalk”, the official part of the evening ended with the “March of the Titans” by the young formation “5er Blech” from Unterallgäu.

The audience, including Petershausen's mayor Marcel Fath, rewarded the performances with enthusiastic applause and demanded several encores. The acclaimed “99 Balloons” was followed by the “Deutschmeister March” and the Bavarian anthem. Standing ovations rounded off a successful evening.
