Floods are not rare in Bordeaux. Whether during high tides, or in the event of heavy rainfall, the metropolis is increasingly exposed to the risk of flooding and flooding of the Garonne. To deal with this, the community is restoring the natural environments of waterways and maintaining a network of 80 kilometers of dikes, part of which will be reinforced.
During the Bordeaux Métropole council meeting on April 12, elected officials voted in favor of work to strengthen the Saint-Jean - Belcier - Bègles dike, located on the left bank of the Garonne and protecting around 7,000 residents and users of the sector.
“The total length of the containment system is 3.8 kilometers
,” specifies the community.
“The work concerns 600 linear meters in
the town of Bègles
”
and aims to rebuild a low wall and reinforce the banks with riprap.
A territory exposed to rising waters
The cost of the project is estimated at around 3.5 million euros excluding tax.
“This work will make it possible to protect the left bank against the floods of the Garonne”
, details the metropolis, and
“the reinforcement of this section of dike will make it possible to improve the protection of the population and property in the face of floods in which the floods contribute , and this in particular with the reduction of the risk of breach and the homogenization of the dike crest

Bordeaux Métropole also specifies that a quarter of the metropolitan area
“is particularly exposed in the event of rising water levels”
. Crossed by numerous rivers,
“the metropolis has experienced increasingly frequent exceptional natural episodes in recent years”
. Numerous maintenance and renaturation projects are carried out, with the motto that
“the vulnerability of a territory must not be inevitable”
