With the second half of April the summer weather says goodbye. Severe storms are expected on Monday. It can get pretty rough.

Munich – This week Germany is experiencing the erratic April weather, which reveals its extremes. After spring-like temperatures of up to 28 degrees were reached in the first two weeks of the month, a significant drop in temperature is now expected to occur. The previous values were an average of seven degrees above the seasonal averages, which makes the current drop to around ten degrees all the more noticeable.

Weather change after summer days and increased “tornado probability”

An abrupt change in the weather is expected for the new week, as qualified meteorologist Dominik Jung reports in a press release. In the week starting Monday (April 15), daily maximum temperatures are expected to fall by 10 to 15 degrees, which represents a significant drop compared to the weekend. In addition, ground frost could occur at night.

“However, this weather change will be explosive today,” warns Jung. Towards the evening a cold front will reach the west, temperatures will drop and bring showers and thunderstorms. Locally there may be heavy rain, hail and squalls. Jung warns of strong winds: “Even the probability of tornadoes” is significantly increased. This is due to the wind directions and speeds changing with altitude. “But we have to wait and see whether education will actually happen! “It can get rough here and there,” says Jung.

German weather service warns: storms and wind in almost all of Germany

The German Weather Service also issues a warning, but less about tornadoes and more about storms and gusts of wind. This warning affects the entire country, excluding the north-east and east, and is valid until 2am on Tuesday (April 16). At higher altitudes such as the Alps above 1500 meters, in the Black Forest and on the Fichtelberg, heavy squalls can be expected.

A cold front is expected to pass through the country during the night. This causes night temperatures to fall to between 0 and 5 degrees. In the higher low mountain ranges there may be wet snow or sleet.

Temperatures are falling – summer is not in sight for now

A significant drop in temperature will characterize the entire next week. Up to 18 degrees are still possible this Monday, but from Tuesday (April 16th) temperatures will drop to just 8 to 12 degrees. According to the DWD, it will remain cool in the following days, with a mix of showers, thunderstorms, clouds and wind, but also occasional sunny spells. “There are no more summer days in sight,” explained meteorologist Jung. Nevertheless, winter is not imminent. “Snow usually only falls in significant quantities from 1000 m above sea level, and that’s in the Alps.”
