The current advance of Israeli ground forces and a close look into the south of the Gaza Strip: Our maps provide an insight into the latest developments in the war in Israel.
Maps help make conflicts more tangible and clearly visualize the war zone. Since the terrorist attacks by the radical Islamic Hamas on October 7, 2023, the decades-long conflict between Israel and the Gaza Strip has escalated, lastingly shaking the densely populated country on the Mediterranean coast. In addition to the relentless rocket attacks by the Israeli military (IDF), the government of Benjamin Netanyahu began a ground offensive on October 27 to locate and eliminate Hamas fighters and leaders in the Gaza Strip.
We update our Gaza Strip maps automatically every day in the early hours of the morning. We show the status of the cards with the date in the graphics. This is the creation date - the underlying data and sources are naturally at least a few hours older and do not always have to reflect the latest status on site.
Southern Gaza and the city of Rafah require special attention as the ground offensive in northern Gaza sent hundreds of thousands of Palestinians fleeing to safety in the south. There is a Palestinian refugee camp in Rafah, where the majority of those who fled have sought refuge.
The basics of our maps of the war in Israel
For the Gaza Strip maps, we mark as ground offensive all areas in which the Israeli army is or has been militarily active according to the Institute of the Study of War (ISW) and the American Enterprise Institute (AEI). In the maps, we deliberately distinguish areas in the Gaza Strip from this category of ground offensive since the beginning of the war in Israel, which only the Israeli military identifies accordingly. These can be found separately on the map as “unconfirmed advances”.
In addition to the ground offensive by the Israeli army, we also designate the so-called military exclusion zone outside the Gaza Strip. We also mark the Besor River in the Gaza Strip, which was long considered the southern end of an evacuation area. However, it became apparent that Israel's military had also taken control of large areas beyond the river in the south.
As the Ukraine war has already shown, all reporting on wars is subject to unavoidable limits. Even daily maps, despite all the tests, can only ever be the best possible approximation of what is happening in the Gaza Strip and Israel.
