Highlights: Traffic announced this Monday that it will install 88 new radars on Spanish roads this year, 60% of them in sections. Most of the new speed control devices will be placed on conventional roads, where 7 out of 10 fatal accidents occur. This increase has been made public coinciding with a speed control campaign that will last a week. The campaign will take place between this Monday, April 15, and next Sunday, April 21, and agents from the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard and local police officers participating in this initiative will participate. Inappropriate speed is the third most common factor in traffic accidents, especially those that result in fatalities. Last year, 211 accidents with deaths were recorded in which this factor was present, according to the Baseline Project, a road safety program of which 18 countries are part. All new vehicles registered as of July 6 must have a series of advanced safety functions, the so-called ADAS, among which is the Intelligent Speed Assistant (ISA). This system displays the speed limit of the road you are driving on, and a sign recognition system.

The DGT launches a conventional speed control campaign, where 7 out of 10 fatal accidents occur

Traffic announced this Monday that it will install 88 new radars on Spanish roads this year, 60% of them in sections. Most of the new speed control devices will be placed on conventional roads, where 7 out of 10 fatal accidents occur. It is still early to know the exact locations, according to sources from the General Directorate of Traffic. This increase has been made public coinciding with a speed control campaign that will last a week and is part of a European initiative promoted by the RoadPol traffic police association. The campaign will take place between this Monday, April 15, and next Sunday, April 21, and agents from the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard and local police officers participating in this initiative will participate.

The increase in radars on Spanish roads represents a growth of 6.7% on the devices that the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT), dependent on the Ministry of the Interior, manages on Spanish roads. Currently, they have 711 fixed speed control points, 76 section and 525 mobile radars. Traffic powers are transferred to Catalonia, the Basque Country and Navarra, where they began to manage the roads last July and there will be a period - less than five years - during which the Foral Police and the Civil Guard will continue to jointly carry out traffic control tasks. on the highway.

The speed controls carried out during this week will be announced using variable message panels or with vertical signs, since it is a preventive campaign. The objective is to reduce not only road accidents due to excess speed, but also the injuries that occur in this type of accident.

Inappropriate speed is the third most common factor in traffic accidents, especially those that result in fatalities. Last year, 211 accidents with deaths were recorded in which this factor was present. “Compliance with legal speed limits is not only a legal obligation, but also a moral responsibility,” said the deputy director general of mobility and technology management of the DGT, José Ruiz Boada.

Speed on conventional roads is one of the fields in which Spain must improve, according to the results of the Baseline Project, a road safety program of which 18 countries are part and which aims to monitor safety progress. Compliance with the speed limit on conventional roads is 43%, a low level, similar to that recorded in Belgium. However, on highways and urban roads it is above most European countries.

All new vehicles registered as of July 6 must have a series of advanced safety functions, the so-called ADAS, among which is the Intelligent Speed Assistant (ISA). This system displays the speed limit of the road you are driving on, and a sign recognition system that detects temporary speed limitations and helps the driver know and respect the speed limits.
