When the firefighters arrived, called by the national gendarmerie who had been warned by a local resident around 1 a.m., the 300 square meters of the centenary stone house were
“three quarters of it ablaze”
according to our sources. Firefighters used three lances to extinguish the fire which broke out at Le Pout, route de Créon, in Gironde. The presence of the resident of the house was known and confirmed by his daughter, who immediately went to the scene. His father's remains were extracted from the rubble of the blaze, found under part of the collapsed roof.
The centenarian of this village of 589 souls was
“a brave gentleman”
according to a resident of the town. Abbot Alban Kerne, parish priest of Créon, describes a man who was
“kind, fervent and very attached to the church of Le Pout, where he was baptized”
, who
“systematically came to mass, brought by parishioners because he could not move alone
. Born at the beginning of May, the deceased was preparing to celebrate his 101st birthday and attend the upcoming baptism of one of his great-grandchildren.
An investigation, led by the Gironde gendarmerie, is underway this Wednesday. Technical and scientific samples must help clarify the exact circumstances that led to the tragedy.
