Citizens demand 30 km/h speed limit in Egling: local council rejects application - “It would be a bureaucratic monster”

Highlights: A citizen of Eglingen, Germany, wants speed limits of 30 km/h on as many roads as possible. The local council discussed the issue at its most recent meeting. The application for review was rejected by the Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen district office. As a result of the rejection, Eglingen would have to take the issue into its own hands, explained mayor Hubert Oberhauser. He warned that Eglingen had already proven in the past that they were open to speed limits of 30 km/h in the town. The proposed resolution was therefore to reject the application, which was presented to the local council on May 2. The council has yet to decide whether to take up the matter further or if it will be decided in the future. The current application was submitted by Robert Heinrich, who lives not far away from the town's main road. He spoke to the committee again about his concerns. Concerned residents see a potential danger spot on the way to school, for example.

Speed 30, if possible throughout the town: That's what a citizen of Eglingen wants. The local council recently considered his application - before unanimously rejecting it.

Egling – 30 km/h, if possible throughout the town: That’s exactly what Eglinger Robert Heinrich wants. In a motion, he called for the maximum speed to be limited to 30 kilometers per hour on as many roads as possible, primarily on state roads. The local council discussed the issue at its most recent meeting.

Egling: Citizens want 30 km/h speed limits on as many streets as possible

Mayor Hubert Oberhauser emphasized that Egling had already proven in the past that they were open to speed limits of 30 km/h. Such a zone already exists in Neufahrn, “we are currently spending a lot of money on traffic calming in Deining.”

The Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen district office received the current application for review - and rejected it. “Now it’s up to us to think about how we as a community deal with this,” explained treasurer Daniela Simon. As a result of the rejection, Egling would have to take the issue into his own hands. “We would have to commission a planning office and examine not just the busy streets, but all the streets in our districts,” explained the mayor.

He warned: “That would be an administrative monster with enormous costs.” The proposed resolution was therefore to reject the application. Applicant Heinrich was also among the listeners in the meeting room. He spoke to the committee again about his concerns. Concerned residents see a potential danger spot on the way to school, for example. “It would be nice if we looked at the matter in detail. And don’t wait for something to happen,” he demanded.

Discussion about Tempo 30 in the Eglingen local council - “Question of proportionality”

Oberhauser himself lives not far away from the school. “I didn’t notice that it was particularly loud there or that people drove particularly fast there,” said the town hall boss. The traffic situation is “very safe”: a crossing aid has been set up and traffic measurements are also carried out regularly. Local councilor Michael Neubauer agreed: “We take the issue of road safety very seriously.”

Dr. Jakob Bernlochner pointed out that it was “a question of proportionality”. “We cannot introduce a speed limit of 30 on all busy roads and at the same time ensure mobility.” Heinrich was not satisfied with these arguments. He felt it was “unfair” that his application was only based on one person.

“I would be happy to start a larger campaign if it gets more attention.” Oberhauser put an end to the discussion: “On the whole, we drive sensibly. If you have to do something visually, we have always found a solution that works.” The application was unanimously rejected.
