"Ours is an extraordinarily beautiful, but fragile country. Climate changes and torrential rain cause enormous damage. The phenomena are becoming increasingly frequent and this requires a rethink in the planning of the works. The securing of the territory can no longer be postponed, also considering the fact that, on the basis of our data, prevention costs about a fifth of what is spent to repair the damage of disastrous events".
This was expressed by the president of the National Council of Engineers Angelo Domenico Perrini, this morning in Rome, from the stage of the first National Day of Prevention and Mitigation of Hydrogeological Risk, promoted in synergy by his National Council and together with that of geologists, whose president Arcangelo Francesco Violo spoke of a day, "which we plan to make an annual event", which "is born from the desire to compare technicians with representatives of institutions on the topic of hydrogeological risk. Over the last 80 years, 350 billion have been spent to repair the damage caused by extreme events. These are figures that adequately describe what is a real emergency. Why have we not been able to provide an answer? It is no longer a problem of resources, but rather an organizational problem", he stated, urging the initiation of "adequate planning".
The professionals' initiative, which takes place at the Acquarioromano in the capital, was attended by, among others, the ministers of infrastructure and civil protection Matteo Salvini and Nello Musumeci and the head of the civil protection department Fabrizio Curcio.
