in the Cerro Carancho prison with preventive detention. Initially, he was charged with especially aggravated homicide and femicide, a crime that in Uruguay carries penalties of between
15 and 30 years in prison
.
The autopsy confirmed that Bárbara Cecilia Prieto was
the victim of a sexual attack
before being murdered. And police sources anticipated at a press conference that there are
“images that place the accused young man with the victim
. ”
The case that shocks Uruguay took place on Tuesday morning, when Prieto left his house and was heading towards the Rivera Teacher Training Institute, where he was studying. On the way he met a young man who made him deviate from his path, according to the newspaper El País.
It is known that the accused
was not the boyfriend of the murdered young woman, but they did know each other in the neighborhood
. According to the police report, around 7 p.m., the victim's brother showed up at the police station reporting that she had not returned to her house and that they did not have any information about her either. Something that was not usual.
Based on the complaint, the Police then began to track images from security cameras in the area that Prieto could have traveled. And there was a follow-up to a special point where she was no longer known:
the video images and the cell phone signal were lost near a shopping center
.
The Police began to search that area. Hours later, the young woman's body appeared in a field very close to the shopping center, in the southern area of Rivera.
According to Montevideo Portal, the man approached the victim on a bicycle,
threatened her with a knife and took her to a vacant lot
located on Don Martin Padern Martínez Street. Prieto was found half-naked and with signs of violence, in the vicinity of the Melancia Shopping Center.
Hours later, the 20-year-old was arrested.
"There are images that compromise him
," the local police anticipated.
The case shocked the Uruguayan town of Rivera. So much so that this Wednesday, when he was transferred to prison after his statement, the femicide was awaited by a crowd.
A dense police cordon and fences prevented chaos. However, there were moments of tension. On their way out, there were insults, pushes and struggles. Shouting "Justice", the crowd protested and tried to lynch him.
