In a few days, a jury will vote on the drafts for the air base conversion. The results form the basis for further planning. Citizens can also find out more about the winning designs.

– The process for redesigning the air base is one step further. After the most recent meeting of the conversion committee, the framework planning for the future area will be prepared when the winning designs of the urban development competition are determined in a few days. The decision was unanimous, but there was still criticism of the entire procedure.

Nadja Kripgans, who is responsible as conversion manager at the town hall, reported on the current status of the process. The urban development competition has reached the second stage. Five planning offices are currently working in depth on their designs for the air base area.
The five planning teams presented their designs with other offices in the first stage of the urban planning competition last fall and emerged as winners. Since then, her task has been to further deepen the designs. The jury will decide a second time on April 24th. “The decision will set the tone for further planning on the air base site,” says the city administration’s presentation.
In May it will be the citizens' turn again. The results of the competition will then be presented in various formats, both in person and digitally, it is said. Among other things, the plans will be exhibited in the city laboratory on Pucher Straße. The results of the competition are in turn important pillars for the framework planning that is then developed for the entire area.
Costs and financing also need to be planned. According to the city administration, this task should be taken over by a project manager. Finance officer Klaus Wollenberg (FDP) didn't like it. “I don’t understand why we’re hiring a third-party company to tell us how to finance this,” he told the committee. Mayor Christian Götz replied: “We have to get external help because it simply cannot be done internally.”
There was further criticism from FDP city councilor Wollenberg regarding the relationship between commercial and residential areas on the future site. “We had made a decision to plan work there first, then living there,” said Wollenberg.
Mayor Götz emphasized that every municipality has to make an “incredible advance payment” when designating commercial areas, for example in order to build an infrastructure there. Years later, money comes back to the city through trade taxes. “That’s why businesses and apartments should ideally be built in parallel,” said Götz.
The designs for the second phase will be on display in the city laboratory from April 26th to May 17th. All information about the competition and conversion is available online at www.zukunft-fliegerhorst.de.
