In 2023, the incidence of news on 'diversity' is growing in Italian news programs - in particular ethnicity and racial issues, gender and identity - but mostly in emergency, criminal and problematic situations. This is highlighted by the 'Diversity Media Report 2024', the annual research on the representation of diversity in Italian information and entertainment media, conducted by the Diversity Foundation and presented at Palazzo Marino.
According to research conducted in collaboration with the Pavia Observatory, the space given to people from underrepresented categories in services relating to social issues and rights and in the so-called Soft news (customs and society) is still too low. Disability, LGBT+ and Physical Appearance - reports the Foundation - are still largely absent from the news, while in entertainment products the narration often uses paternalistic or sensationalist tones. Signs of evolution come from cinema, young series, podcasts, radio and digital programs, while the flagship of inclusive representation are foreign TV series.
Like every year, the programs that emerged from the research are nominated for the 2024 Diversity Media Awards, a charity evening event hosted by Francesca Michielin and Ema Stokholma, staged on May 28th at the Teatro Lirico Giorgio Gaber in Milan and broadcast again this year on Rai1, on 28 June in the late evening. Nominated for best Italian film are 'There's Still Tomorrow' by Paola Cortellesi, 'Io Capitano', 'The Last Time We Were Children' by Claudio Bisio, 'My Hair Hurts' by Roberta Torre, 'Nata per te' by Fabio Mollo and 'Stranizza d'amuri' by Giuseppe Fiorello. Among the Italian TV series, there will be Gigolò per caso, La legge by Lidia Poët, Love Club and This world won't make me bad. Amalia Ercoli Finzi, the first woman in Italy to graduate in aeronautical engineering, Chiara Bordi, a young actress who made herself known in series such as Prisma and The Fantastic Five, the Italian-Tunisian rapper Ghali, Jakub Jankto, one of the very few footballers who coming out regarding her sexual orientation, Luciana Littizzetto and Paola Cortellesi are the 5 candidates for character of the year.
