The US blocks Palestine at the UN, the anger of the PNA and Hamas

2024-04-19T16:35:28.424Z

Highlights: At 11pm Italian time, after enormous pressure from the Arab states, the USA blocked the draft Security Council resolution with a veto. The text obtained 12 votes in favor (Algeria, Russia, China, France, Guyana, Sierra Leone, Mozambique, Slovenia, Malta, Ecuador, South Korea, Japan) and two abstentions (Great Britain and Switzerland). "We vigorously support a Palestinian state under a peace agreement. But premature actions here in New York, Even with the best intentions, they will not lead to that outcome," explained US Ambassador Robert Wood. For Russia, however, "the use of the veto by the US is an attempt to stop history, and the fact that Washington is practically isolated speaks for itself. "We ask the US to hear the voice of reason," said Moscow delegate Vassily Nebenzia. "Our people will continue their struggle until the creation of an independent and fully sovereign Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital," said Hamas.

Palestine's full entry into the United Nations collides with Washington's wall, unleashing the wrath of the PA and Hamas. The USA, as announced, blocked with a veto the draft Security Council resolution which "recommended to the General Assembly the admission of the state of Palestine as a member of the UN". The text obtained 12 votes in favor (Algeria, Russia, China, France, Guyana, Sierra Leone, Mozambique, Slovenia, Malta, Ecuador, South Korea, Japan) and two abstentions (Great Britain and Switzerland). “We vigorously support a Palestinian state under a peace agreement. And President Joe Biden has repeated numerous times since October 7 that the only path to peace is a two-state solution. But premature actions here in New York, Even with the best intentions, they will not lead to that outcome,” explained US Ambassador Robert Wood.

For Russia, however, "the use of the veto by the US is an attempt to stop history, and the fact that Washington is practically isolated speaks for itself". "We ask the US to hear the voice of reason," said Moscow delegate Vassily Nebenzia. In fact, although in recent days the United States has attempted behind the scenes to convince other member countries of the CDS to at least abstain so as not to reach the required majority (of nine votes in favor and no veto), in the end even allies such as Korea South, Japan and France decided to support the draft resolution. The Palestinian Authority reacted with irritation to the US veto, calling it a "blatant aggression" that pushes the Middle East "to the brink of the abyss". "This aggressive US policy towards Palestine, its people and their legitimate rights represents a blatant attack on international law and an encouragement to continue the genocidal war against our people, which further pushes the region to the brink of 'abyss,'" President Abu Mazen attacked in a note. If it had passed in the CDS, the request would then have had to obtain a two-thirds majority in the General Assembly. Condemnation also came from Hamas which in a short note assured that "our people will continue their struggle until the creation of an independent and fully sovereign Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital".
